In the manual on my Rebel XTi is says on page 125: Being able to analyze the histogram and using it to improve the next shot requires advanced knowledge and experience. Only a basic explanation is provided here." Well basic is right because I can't find where it tells me how to open it so I can use it. Can any of you help me out here? Thanks! Greg

The histogram can only be used while playbacking another image.

1. Press the playback button.

2. Press display until the histogram shows up.

3. Have fun!

Thank, I had the same question. I found it for pictures taken but couldn't find a way see it before shooting.

Thats a little disapointment, but oh well... It still shoots AWESOME pictures.

There is no way to see it before shooting

The histogram is created with the data from the jpeg as far as i know.

You can create a "live histogram" for the same reason that you can't have live preview.
To get the data the sensor has to be exposed.

Page 50, "Image Playback", Step 2, second bullet point: "Press the [DISP.] button to switch the display format." Right underneath that are pictures showing the three display formats.

Page 124, "Shooting Information Display", first sentence: "When you press the [DISP.] button during single-image playback, you can switch to the shooting information display. The shooting information display shows the following." This is followed by pictures showing the two display formats other than picture-only.

What the manual DOESN'T tell you is that this is a "sticky" setting. However you left it when you were last in "playback" is how it will stay until you change it. Of particular interest, it also affects the automatic "image review" right after you snap a picture.

Also, with 1 of the Custom Functions you can choose between the default "Luminance" histogram or the "Red/Green/Blue" histogram.

The separate Red/Green/Blue may help when trying to "shoot to the right" (getting the histogram as far to the right without blowing hightlights)...If a scene has a lot of Red and the Red/Green/Blue histogram only shows the Red portion as "highlight blown", the exposure may be very good.
