Hope someone can help; Neither Dell nor Olympus has been much help!

Synopsis: Windows98SE, Oly C-3040Z cam. Had cam for about a year, worked great, downloading via USB no problem. Due to a registry problem a couple of months ago, had to reload Windows...been downhill ever since. Computer doesn't recognize camera, or rather didn't until recently, but connection doesn't always work and when I uplug the camera from USB, computer usually locks up and has to be restarted by a Hard Reset. When camera does connect, downlading is no problem. There seems to be difference of opinions between some of the tech support people about connecting/disconnecting USB hot!! Camera works OK on other computer, and various USB devices work OK on all ports of this computer.... I'm about ready to throw in the towel! Has ANYBOY seen this problem?? And if so what is the fix???
Thanks in advance....

I have similar problems. When the USB connection works one time it won't work next time, etc.

According to a seemingly knowledgeable tech rep., the system BIOS needs to be upgraded. He told me about sisoftsandra, a program that can tell me who made the mother board. Then I can get an upgrade from them. I downloaded the program, but when I tried to run it, it said a file was missing. Now I don't know what to do.
Maybe some computer whiz will read this and offer a suggestion.
Hope this is some help. At least you know you are not alone.
I think I'll try the PC Board on this site. I'll keep you posted.

I just bought and installed a Zio reader yesterday. Windows 98. The driver wasn't recognized by my system. I downloaded the driver from dazzle.com and forced the install by plugging the card reader and letting the new hardware wizard install from the DL'd files. The reader works but it locks up in Windows Explorer when I select the card/drive, unless I have restarted the computer before inserting the card. I'm not experienced enough to figure these things out. I just wanted to throw this in with your USB question in case someone comes along with all kinds of answers.

I had a similar problem with Windows XP and a Zio reader. Sometimes any software I used to access the Smartmedia would hang up. Ended up doing a hard computer restart This happended any time I removed a card and then put one back in the reader. On a fresh computer start, I could insert a card and it worked. . Updated to Camedia 2.5, downloaded and installed latest XP Zio driver. No difference. Decided to go to a Sandisk reader. I noticed in the instructions for the Sandisk that you are supposed to "eject" the card before removing it. I do this by going into My Computer, right clicking the F drive which is the reader on the USB port, then clicking on eject, then removing the card from the reader. This seems to work. I have not tried reinstalling the Zio to see if it would work.

Ken, thanks for sharing. I tries the Zio four times using the right click/eject as you suggested. My computer didn't freeze up at all. Well, gotta go check the status of the battery charger. New camera yesterday and all. Thanks so much.

If your computer is a AMD processor based then it probably has the via chipset in which case you'd need the latest 4 in 1 drivers plus the usb filter...

Do you use the same usb port? Is it on the computer or an external
hub? Dids either tech support remove the usb device from the
registry then reinstall the camedia software?
I have tried all USB ports, the two on the computer and the 4-port hub. All devices that work, work on any port. The camera, when it works, can be on any of the ports. I have removed it from Device Manager, when it shows up there(it doesn't always) and reinstalled it. I have reinstalled Camedia Master 2.5 and it doesn't make any difference. The camera used to work just fine on here; it still works just fine on a friend's computer.--Bill

I suggest a complete reinstall of the camera. first disconnect the camera and uninstall its software. Next is the difficult part and I'm going to pass because it entails editing the registry(CAUTION: make an error here you will reinstall your OS) to remove your camera completly , olympus should be able to assist here. Reinstall camera as normal

Before you had to reloaded windows, did you download any patches or updates that you haven't done since you reloaded windows. Also could it be your USB cable to your camera? Just some thoughts...
