USB dock

Hi

Can teh USB dock adjust focus settings dependant on focus distance? I looked at the table here:

and it looks like the dock actually cannot do very much. Only set OS, Focus Speed and Focus limiter?

Anybody that have used it, could they give some info?

I suppose the red rings tells what it can do ... FW update and Focus setting, while only one lens has got all options?

The lenses that the dock supports, you get a grid with focal lengths and distance (if it's a zoom lens) where you can alter the AF adjustment per grid entry.

The 120-300 is special because you can set some things you can't with the other lenses - like focal distance, and setting focus ranges for multiple modes the lens can be in.

Plus the USB dock makes it super easy to update lens firmware. Not that lens firmware seems to change much, but still...

Don't blame you for getting confused. The circle (maru in Japanese) and cross (batsu in Japanese) notation is a Japanese thing. I guess people from the west will go for tick and cross instead.

The dock can adjust settings for the 35 Art at four different distance settings, three of them close range and one at infinity I believe. It will not store settings for more than one body though. As you alluded to, there are additional adjustments possible with some of the zooms and at a couple focal lengths. I have the 35 and the 24-105 but have been happy without adjustment, using them on two bodies.

After you have docked a lens, the program remembers the lens even after you disconnect it - you can't see the settings it saved last (which I wish it would) but something useful you can see is the serial number of your lens.

So if you were getting all dock compatible lenses (not unthinkable given the line now) it makes for a hand way to catalog what you have in case of theft or loss.

17-70 C 4 focal lengths and 4 distance ranges

18-35 A 4 focal lengths and 4 distance ranges

This is what you get at this point. As I have the SD1 and SD1M, I haven't made use of the DOC aside from testing. I know my 1835 needs extreme adjustment close-in but taken the time to figure it out as I generally don't shoot close than 10 feet or so and it seems to do fine.

So you need to shoot test shots at each range, adjusting the settings via the doc until you figure out which ones give you the best results. It is some-what time-consuming to say the least and then it is only good for one body. I suspect they may update that some day. With primes you can generally get away with Microfocus Adjustment.

Yes the software is pretty to look at but does the bare minimum, it should read and display the current settings when the lens is docked and also allow the settings to be saved or recalled so that lenses can be customized to suit different bodies. I have two adjustable lenses and two bodies with significantly different AF systems.
