Is anyone successfully using a USB CD-R successfully. I have a Rev. B iMac, and I would like to add a CD-R drive.

Any recommendations?

Thanks in advance

Have you ever been to http://dealchat.com/mac/ ? If not, go there and do a search on this topic. What I have been reading is that it is slow. Believe the numbers that I have seen have been something like no more than 2x or 4x. You will need to decide if you can live with this. I had a 2x scsi for more than a year and a half, and simply used the "downtime" to do other things.

I have the Sony Spressa USB and i use it without problem. The software that came is a little bit «restrictive» but I bought Toast Deluxe and all is ok.

We did get an USB CD-RW almost free (like $50) that didn't come with any software or anything. Luckily I already had Toast Deluxe so there were no problems at all to start using it. I have successfully burnt CD's in x4 (both Audio and files). The model? Futsumi or something like that.

The main thing is to not expect the USB burner to burn in any faster speed than x4 and you're set. Sure beats my old CD-RW that only burns in x2.

Paul,

I purchased an Iomega ZipCD two weeks ago. I have had no problems burning CD-R disks. I am running it on a G4/500 with OS 9.0.4. I have the ZipCD plugged into a powered USB hub. Others have stated that they have had problems with this type connection, however, it works fine for me.

I plan on upgrading to Toast Deluxe in the future for more format possibilities, but for now, the OEM version that came with the ZipCD (4.1.2) works just fine.

Hope this was some help,

Frank

Hi Paul,

The Iomega is excellent but 4x maximum for data and only 2x for audio. You will need a firewire drive to go faster.

Hope this helps,

Richard

I have a Sony Spressa USB also. Mine also works just great. However, I can't get reliable 4x speed no matter what software I use. 2x is 100% though.

Clyde,

What cd-r's are you using? With Kodak gold ultima we can get reliable 4x out of our Iomega cd-r. However using no name disks, well, they got a name, I just can't think of it right now, we can only get 2x.
