hello,

i am considering buying an S50, but i notice it still uses USB 1.1.. my computer doesnt have USB 2.0, but i'm sure my next setup will..

i would be really interested to know when Canon will implement 2.0 and or whether it is something worth waiting the months untill the next generation of S series for..

thanks a lot,
              • Noah

The above statement is unclear. In any event, worry not, regardless which version of USB you have, the two devices will communicate. USB 2.0 is downward/backward comaptible.

While USB 2.0 is much faster than USB 1.1, your camera cannot keepup with it anyway. There's really no need for USB 2 in this application. Some CF card readers are USB 2.0, but memory speed dictates the transfer rate - it's much slower than the link.

Regards...

Hi,

USB1.1 speed limitation is around 12Mb/sec while most CF card is a lot slower than this. My Transcend CF 512Mb 30x is about 4.5Mb/sec and I think USB1.1 does the job just fine.

why would the vendor want to implement the USB2.0=480Mb/sec into their digital camera? while most CF cards are still very slow, probably still requires sometimes to get to 12Mb/sec.

I think if USB2.0 really make the transfer from camera to computer a lot faster then it is worth the extra money that we'll paid to have it on a camera otherwise it is just a waste of money, while you can't get a media card fast enough to utilize the speed of the USB2.0 advantage.

Also I would never think that Canon gonna built USB2.0 onto their camera Sx series camera or at least until S60 or on the next Gx series model.

well what do you guys think?

Regards,

John

My USB 2.0 Reader blows away my old 1.1. I have a Ridata, which is similar to the Transcend in speed.

I'm not worried about cameras not having USB 2.0. I rather use a CF Reader. Much faster and saves my camera battery life.

USB1.1 max speed is 12 Mbps. That's mega BITS per second. Which translates into 12/8 = 1.5 mega BYTES per second, way slower than what your CF card can do. You will see a great increase in speed when switching to a USB2 CF reader, or when Canon will finally get off it's a$$ and put USB 2.0 into it's cameras.

not always the case.

Card readers are useful only when you have more than one CF, and you USE more than one CF. Then no matter what you will constantly take the CF's out of the camera, and might as well use a reader to download the pics.

On the other hand when you have only one CF card (like I do), then it makes no sense to keep taking it out of the camera to read it in the reader, and then putting it back. It's much quicker to attach the cable to the camera.

Sadly, with USB1.1 cameras, if you have a large card the transfer will take quite a bit and will use 4-5 mins of your batteries depending on the size of the card. If they started using USB 2.0, the transfers would be so fast it would no longer be an issue. This once again may weigh on whether you want a reader or not.

Lastly, a reader is just another thing to clutter your desk. If you don't need it, don't get it.
Card readers are much better and fast than attaching the directly
to the PC. Get the S50, then a card reader than has USB 2.0
capability.

I think currently, USB2.0 cuts too much into the digicam's cost, that why most consumer digicams don't have it. I think one of newest Sony consumer cam has it. Other than that, I think the new Olympus pro digi SLR has both firewire and usb2.0.

With that said, USB2.0 definitely improves the transfer rate for CF cards.

USB1.1 has theoretic max bandwith of 12Mbps or roughly 1.2 Mbytes/sec. but realistically, you max out at about 700-800Kbytes/s (you can check Phils reviews. I've also ran some tests). Most CF cards are much faster than that. My Kingston CF gets about 2.2 MBytes/s using a USB2.0 reader. That's about 3 times faster than USB1.1. Other highspeed CF cards might be even faster (as long as you you're not using Sandisk cards, they suck).

oh and the 1.5MB/s is a theoretical limit, with real world values usually below 1MB/s

I didn’t let the lack of USB 2.0 stop me from buying an S45 or a 10D. Although USB 1.1 is slower, it only adds minutes to the download time. As soon as the first photos are downloaded you can start reviewing & processing them, this step takes the most time anyway. In terms of battery life, I have to recharge the batteries anyway, so I’m not concerned with a few minutes extra use. IMO I don’t think the extra battery use causes a significant decrease in the battery life, they are rated in terms of both number of recharges and overall life in time. Generic batteries are not expensive.

USB 1.1 is a shortcoming, however if I waited for USB 2.0, I still would not have a camera, at least not one of these Canons. In my situation I'm happier with the cameras.

You was right, i was misconcept about Bytes/bits, 1Byte=8bits! even though I still think USB2.0 in camera not gonna must faster (of course it will) but then end result gonna be a lot of heat might built up during transfer? (I might be wrong on this-just my thinking) if it is not efficiently implement. I might reduce the lifespan of your camera!

Also I think Canon try to keep cost low to stay competitive, isn't it? so it gonna have USB2.0 but for a while wait though.

BlackJack, Thanks for your correction though!

I bought my S30 last year, and had it 'shipped' to my Orlando vacation destination - saving $135. ( I live in the UK).

Took 300+ snaps, returned home to my USB 1.1 pc - opened a nice cool bottle of beer, and watched my Orlando snaps slowly filter through.

When the deed was done, I opened another cold beer and relived 14 magical days in the Sunshine State.

USB 2 ?? Live is for living, not counting your bits or bytes.

I must concur with Brian. Of all the concerns over the various cameras, I've never seen regrets over download speed. I've taken thousands of pictures with S100, S40 and S50, and have never even noticed the download speed.

You might re-think the card reader suggestion. They're only $10 at CompUSA, and they don't need any software installation. You just plug them into ANY available USB port and immediately your card looks like a hard drive. You can drag and drop your pictures, open them and everything.

This was especially helpful to me on a recent vacation, when I downloaded pics to the hotel's computer (without installing any software) and then emailed them home to my Dad. I also burned a back-up CDROM of all my pictures at an Internet Cafe halfway through the trip. You can't do this easily if you have to install software on their computer.

I just can't understand the resistance to removing the card from the camera.

gee :?)

thanks for all the helpful info guys!!

i will order the S50 really soon and maybe i can share some stuff on this site one day..

i'll definately get the card reader to save on time/batteries.. it sounds like quite a good idea..

thanks again and by the way - you can hearr some music i've made at http://www.mp3.com/noah_cohn if you're bored and have a minute.. :?)

bye,

I went, and listened to 'Hell and September' - you said -

" I wrote this 10 days before the 9/11 disaster. I heard voices that warned me about it."

No offence intended, but jeeeez - the topic of USB transfer rates suddenly became interesting.

The music was ....well, each to our own.

At least I did download and listen to it - via 56K - so I certainly have patience!!

cool - thanks for listening..! i hope you can get broadband soon.. :?)

yes - i know it wasn't a very fun subject.. it was quite traumatic actually.. but i swear it actually happened several days before the disaster..

after that the voices got worse and now i am taking medication that has rid me of them entirely..
