I got my hands on this great Air King 4606D today manufactured in 1946. Beautiful big tubes inside.

great radio but the image is very dark hard to make out the radio, My fave was the transocianic from Zeneth especially the last ones

As a ham radio operator, I always enjoyed those old radios.... remember the old "green eye" zeniths? Used to buy them for a few bucks at flea markets, retube them.... usually needed condensers and coils replaced/ repaired.... and as a woodworker, would redo the bodies..... and then make a few bucks selling them.... still have a old tube tester.... ( might as well sell that bugger!) .... but the pic shown is just too dark to reveal the pretty lines and depth of the old wood....

I've been looking at this image now for several days and it has grown on me, At first viewing the the overall darkness bothered me. Then I remembered visiting my great grandmother on evenings when she would listed to the radio. At that point the lighting started to make sense.

Pretty cool - the bulb is a nice touch. Any thought on firing up those tubes and photographing the glowing tubes as well?

I do like valves as the Brits call them tubes for me. I have and still enjoy very much my rebuilt re tubed and upgraded dynaco stereo seventy which I did all the work on. It easily rivals modern unites costing three or four grand and drives even my old Ar3a's

John... I have a Zenith Transocanic in my garage.... still operates too..... but need room for that huge antenna! Yes.... those old radios were a lot of fun.... I can still recall as a child listening to the news about the second WW after dinner while my folks sat in front of the big old floor model radio....

I've done that before. The color version of this photo actually has a speedlight fired off against the back wall with a red gel. So, while it's still dark to some degree there's lots of color going on. I figured with the lamp on it would wash out the flash though.

These weren't mounted in anything, so I couldn't get any glow. I was experimenting with focus stacking:

These are actually functioning tubes - I still use them (one at a time) in one of my guitar amps.

stevo23,

A lovely photo! Very sharp, and beautiful soft tones.
Thanks. It was totally panned by the critics at 1X, but I was pleased with the lighting and look I was able to achieve. If noting else, I learned a good bit.

stevo23,

Yes, they're fussy at 1X, aren't they? Seems they like the more 'artsy' stuff. I've had some of my best shot down in flames there. :-(

It's a weird place to be sure. I will get high marks from the moderators for my curation comments and suggestions that essentially shoot down a photo (honestly of course) and yet they will publish it. So here I see this photo that I shot down, got rewarded for shooting down, and it's getting published.

And then I see something really stunning and give some constructive and positive curation comments and recommend that it be published and I'll get no praise from the moderators and the photographer will give me a 1/5 for my comments. So I NEVER comment on a photo that I vote for publication. It's not that I mind criticism, it just seems so backward.

But there are some stunning photos there as well.
