Tripper Reports

that's nothing, It's only a message to tell you that while your tripper is connected to the computer, you cannot use it's menu because the computer has full control of it.
do not worry about going through the airport security with your
camera and cards but keep them with you all the time and make sure
you have charged battery because they will probably ask you to
power your camera up to check if it is a real working device or a
bogus one. they do ask me to power up my cell phone, cameras etc.

Bring the camera with you as checkin as the check in scan is safe
for electronic devices.
To let you know, I run only mac's and am running OS 10.2.6. I
bought a tripper to use on a large photoshoot where I needed large
amounts of storage. If you or anyone else is interested in a 20GB
tripper I will sell it packaged as I bought it for 225.00. BTW you
do not need to install drivers for OSX, it mounts like a regular
hard drive.

Thank you,
Larry
Hi All,

I am looking at the Tripper as well. Does it work with a Mac OS 10
and above?

Thanks,
Janice

you transfer files from it the same way that you would from any other hard disk. It behave just as a standard hard disk.

I always prefer to copy and paste and then delete later, I think it's safer not to move files just in case there will be power shortage or something like that.

Do you have the latest SP4 (Service pack 4) installed on your computer?
Get Win XP and all your problems will be over.
It should not unplug itself unless your Tripper falls asleep.
On Win XP if it falls asleep all you here is a beep and that is it.

Or if you turn the Tripper off while connected it should also make only beep. Even then I used Win2000 I have never had to stop any attached devices. So install SP4 and see what is going to happen.

Keys on the Tripper are not supposed to be working if the unit is connected to the computer. Did you transfer files with the keys from your CF card or by using file manager?

I trnasferred files form CF to Tripper using the menu options. I still have some reading to do with the manual.
How do I verify my service pack on my home machine?

If I do not have the current service pack, I guess I can download it from the MS site.

Last item, it stated that the tripper would charge in about 2 hours. I left it plugged in over night and the charge light never went to green. Now in leaving it on overnight, I turned off the powersave option.

Do you have to turn on the tripper to have it charge? Or can it be off and still charge. I would think if it was "off" and you plug it in, it will still show the machine as charging?
Any thoughts?

The firmware update will not work with "generic" USB drivers, only the one that Aplux provides. USB-aware versions of Windows can communicate with the Tripper with the generic drivers, so people never install the one that Aplux provides. Win98 is USB-stupid and so it normally requires loading the Aplux software to talk to it.

I succeeded in updating my firmware on Win2K after installing the Aplux drivers (you can figure out which ones you have installed by using the Windows "Driver Manager" tool).

Please, no flames. My intent is to seek information, not to
criticize anyone.

I've been following this forum with the goal of obtaining the
information required to make a decision on which portable HD (or CD
burner) device to purchase.

It seems that every day there's another Tripper glitch reported:
Hardware, software, firmware, user's manual, pilot error. Mostly
shrugged off as minor, but often disabling.

What's up with this device?
Lots of users, so lots or reports of misc. glitches?

I've got a Tripper and it works fine with my XP Pro machine. And
also with an old PII laptop that runs Win 98 SE.

As far as I know, there are two known problems with the Tripper

1. The firmware update program will only work with Win 98. This
can be finessed if you have a DOS boot floppy. You can boot an XP
machine using the DOS floppy and run the firmware update program
from it. (This is irrelevant for new owners, because the Trippers
usually come with the most recent firmware.

2. Shorter than desired battery life. This can be dealt with by
using an external battery. Either one that you make yourself from
Radio Shack parts, or a commercial "Universal" external battert.
insidecomputer.com has such an external battery. This hasn't been
an issue for me. It is an issue for people who use stacks of IBM
microdrives.

There are some clumsy passages in the user manual, but if you know
about these complaints, you probably have also seen the posts that
clarify these issues.

There are always reports from Windows 98 users having problems, but
Win 98 users have more problems. Because quite often it involves
suddenly getting a USB interface working that might not have ever
been used before, so it might not have ever worked.

Also, practically every USB device I've seen says that Windows 98
SE is the minimum, but a lot of Win 98 (not SE) users try to use
USB devices.

Or did you have some other problems in mind?

I like my Tripper because:

1. It worked with the laptop drive I already had. Some other
devices don't let you install your own drive.

2. The Tripper HD to computer HD speed is very fast. The Tripper
CF reader to computer is moderatly fast.

3. Its user interface is simple and works.

4. No weird problems. It works with all my CF cards. And my
Windows XP computer recognized it without needing any additional
drivers. My Win 98 SE laptop works with it, but it needed drivers
installed.

You can't transfer files using menu if Tripper is connected to the computer.
That is why you get message "Key operation not received" on Tripper.
Keys and buttons should not be ON while Tripper is connected.

Charge light will be ON if Tripper is connected and turned on even if it is fully charged. I don't think it ever turns green. I think it turns off then fully charged. At this point your computer should recognize the unit and you should here the beep.
If you use switch on top and turned it off then your computer should
stop the service automatically and you should here the beep again

To check for the service pack, right click on "My Computer"
