This is obviously a matter of personal taste, but I for one find Phil's format much easier to follow than the cookie cutter bbs format you reference. I can never tell who is saying what to whom in those things. They're fine for stream-of-conciousness stuff, but not for seeing the relationship between the various posts. They seem more like a bulletin board with everybody just sticking up whatever they have to say. This site seems more like a series of conversations.

Forget the topic, just look at the format.

Isn't this MUCH easier to use?

This is dumb, I know...but is there a way to have a thread and
replies "open" instead of having to click on a link for every
response? It just makes for easier reading. I poked around for
optional viewing and found none.

Yup, its pretty dumb. The forum I mean Take a look at the Neowin forums (www.neowin.com) they are pretty well organised.

Also, I think, seeing as this is a photography forum, that each thread link could have an icon showing if photos are attached!

Regarding the cutting and pasting to keep the length of the threads down, would it take much in the way of codework to have it so that when a reply window is opened it automatically cuts all of the text except the top line?
