There is a better poll

There is a more accurate poll, it's called actual sales. It's one thing to say, "I want it" and another thing to actually buy it. A lot of people will give you an uniformed haphazard opinion but will never actually spend the money nor will they even have a good idea of the limits. capabilities of the product. The only true measure here is who is actually selling & buying what cameras.

Pranksters are just one limitation with this kind of poll, voting with your money is what counts. I think the sales figures from Nikon, Canon, and Kodak will tell the real story. As for the new 1D, who can say anything about a camera that is not even released yet, never mind that no one has even seen a production model yet.

Surely you mean sales to supplies, actual sales means little except maybe who's bigger or has more marketing clout. For instance using market share in camera equipment, Nikon has a share of 20% and Canon 35%, but Canon can supply five to eight times the number of units to the market place. So Nikon, in proportional terms, do far better. I am not particurlarly interested in polls like these or find them interesting, they are never a true indication of the worth of a piece of equipment, only having the experience and using one can tell you which is better.

Obviously, but this was a 'straw poll' of opinion.

Phil, I did not really understand the purpose of this poll and, as a consequence, I did not vote. What was the correct interpretation of the question: "Which D-SLR for you?" ? Was I supposed to vote for the camera that I would most like to own? Or was I supposed to vote for the camera that I was planning to buy? If the former then obviously I would have voted for the camera that was technically 'the best' (but since there is still relatively little information about the new Canon EOS 1D then this decision would not be easy). If the latter then my vote would have been 'None of the Above', since I consider them all to be too expensive for what they deliver.

In the past I have always owned 35mm film SLRs, my main camera at present is an Olympus E-10 and my long-term intention is to get a full-blown digital SLR, therefore I am in the market-place at which the poll question was aimed (at least in terms of functionality if not in terms of price!). But at present no product from any manufacture meets my requirements -- an affordable digital SLR -- in my opinion the Olympus E-10 (& new E-20) is the best 'compromise' camera that is available.

By not voting in the poll, I am effectively saying 'I am not in the market place for a digital SLR'. But by voting for 'the best', I am effectively saying 'This camera meets my requirements -- I plan to buy one'. However, both of these statements would be untrue. So, Phil, should you ever repeat this poll please add two more options -- 'I want a D-SLR but all of the above are too expensive' and 'I want a D-SLR but all of the above have technical/quality shortcomings'. This would make the poll results far more interesting (in my opinion) and potentially useful for manufacturers (if they bother to listen).

Phil, I did not really understand the purpose of this poll and, as
I agree. This poll had as much usefulness as the following one:

Which sports car for you:
a.) Porsche GT2
b.) Ferrari Modena
c.) Lamborghini VT-6
d.) Aston Martin V12 Vanquish

Anyone can answer, and so? Is this a popularity contest?
There are so many more useful polls Phil can do.......

Which new feature for DPR?
a.) Invited guests and testimonials from established photographers
b.) More comprehensive testing ( good light AF focussing for one )
c.) Chat line for registered members.
d.) 2-D interactive cut-away of a camera showing the effects
of using the zoom, aperture, as well as light trajectory etc...
( very educational )
e.) "Photo of the day" contest

....the possibilities are endless.. and everyone's vote would have
have some significance.

Which new feature for DPR?
a.) Invited guests and testimonials from established photographers
You're more than welcome to contribute... You haven't yet.
b.) More comprehensive testing ( good light AF focussing for one )
Erm.. good light? Erm... I'll think about that.
c.) Chat line for registered members.
No.
d.) 2-D interactive cut-away of a camera showing the effects
of using the zoom, aperture, as well as light trajectory etc...
( very educational )
Erm.. there's lots of good education sites out there.
e.) "Photo of the day" contest
No.

I ain't an established photographer...but I'm working on it. 8o
Of course, if you hand me one of your test cameras, I'd be more than
glad to contribute additionally. I feel I've contributed sufficiently
with the S70 and the S75 already, but of course if you say I "haven't
yet" done so, well then it must be true and that's the end
of it. thx..
b.) More comprehensive testing ( good light AF focussing for one )

Seems like this item has been in demand lately ( and not just
by me ). I would love to see a good light AF showdown between
the G2 and the S85 for instance. Hey, but it's your show, so you
decide.
c.) Chat line for registered members.
No.
I agree. Chat is stupid.
d.) 2-D interactive cut-away of a camera showing the effects
of using the zoom, aperture, as well as light trajectory etc...
( very educational )
Erm.. there's lots of good education sites out there.
none of them have what I mentionned.... unless you can
post a link to one.
e.) "Photo of the day" contest
No.
yeah, enough of them out there already...

Oh well, it's your site and you do as you please. I ain't gonna
tell you what to do but there's always room for improvement.
I glad to see at least now some AF tests are up and running
at DPR... hopefully we'll see some more improvements in the
near future.

Well i found the poll quite cool. It's fine with some fun stuff once in a while.

And of course your suggestions you can allways send to phil via the feedback function

tried it... no good
tried it... no good
tried it... no good

What would be neat would be a 2-D cut of a camera showing
the effects of pressing the zoom button, what happens
when the aperture is reduced, etc.. etc.. and watching the
path of the light as it travels through the various lens groups.
