Looks like a Canon produced a start guide for ambassadors doing evaluation prior to the R3 launch. They should’ve made it available on the Canon portal after the launch as they address most common pitfalls of the R3. My R3, behaves more like my R5 II now in AF, setup correctly. Astounding.

.

Discovered it when I asked ChatGPT about R3 AF advice and eventually I stumbled upon that thread after the 4th response. The reduced shutter lag, multiple suggested BBF configurations which other FM threads alluded to, really make the R3’s response shine. See also:

The idea of PAML setup also is intriguing. I don’t do sports, but having your modes setup against stuff? Smart.

.

The one element not covered, eshutter has a much better hitrate than mechanical/EFCS. When combining eshutter, with switched subjects - initial priority, AE lock to: moving AF button, start by eye ctrl, and a good eye calibration? Hot stuff.

Good to hear! Now that you have it dialled in, how does the AF of the R3 fare against the R5 ii?

The R5 II has “stickier” tracking, still. However, things like subject detection at a distance is greatly improved when using a smaller flexible zone AF with eye control, and the R3 is much more subject sticky. I’m actually using the smallest box, and frequently tying it in with BBF2 with the suggested setup. Things like not picking the correct eye, subject, or loosing it, greatly reduced. We’re talking probably 50% better. Setting initial priority subject detection helps about another 25% in my observation last night at an indoor park. I’ll have to report back more later as I have more time to fine tune my setup. My keeper rate on the R3 has jumped to over 90%, however, it’s not at the 97% level of the R5 II, but better than 80% (before).

The image quality in low light of the R3 just cleans the R5 IIs clock. Colors are really saturated, noise is really controlled comparatively at high ISOs. You look through the EVF and at the scene and go, “wow”.

Edit:

Going through photos from last night, ES produces much more "crispy" shots than mechanical (MS), MS may have RAW NR, ES does not, however the improved sharpness outweighs it for moving subjects, just my 2 cents. Did before, still does. Focus may be tighter with the updated settings, however ES still cleans up compared to MS on the R3.
