The truth on G10 LX3 comparison

Is it more pocketable than the G10? Yes.
Not sure I subscribe to 'levels of pocketability'. Surely something
is either pocketable or it isn't?

The LX3 is clearly pocketable.

It might not be everyone's preferred way to carry it, but it's an
option, and that's the point.

Usually I carry a small bag around with my daily junk in it. It just
seems more practical than trying to pocket all the detritus I have
with me most of the time.

But if I go out to dinner, or to a bar with friends, I generally
won't bother with a bag (and it's too warm for a jacket here most of
the time) so I will slip the LX3 in my trouser pocket. I simply
couldn't do that with the G10. So for me, the G10 would stay at home
a lot more than the LX3 does.

Which, incidentally, is exactly what I found with my G5, and why the
OPTION to pocket a camera was a very big deal for me when the time
came to replace it.

Sounds like me. I usually take the LX3 out in an old Lowepro Nova
Micro shoulder bag which can carry: the LX3, the wide angle lens (and
adapter), a mini flash (but haven't tried it with the new FL-220
which I just got and is a bit bigger), my cell phone, wallet, single
car and garage door keys, and a spare battery. Oh, and my tin of
Copenhagen!

I carry the camera on a wrist strap and have done away with the lens
cap attachment string thing. Never lost a lens cap in 30+ years of
photography anyway. If I know I won't be using the camera for half an
hour or so, I just slip it in my pocket.

As an aside, the LX3 + wide angle lens + wrist strap is really easy
to carry, balancing against wrist and fingers.

If I'm out boozing I put it in a waist bag ("fanny pack"?) which I
get a lot of stick for wearing!

The Canon G10 looks like a neat camera, but as soon as I held one and
saw how much bigger than the LX3 it was, it just was not an option
any more.

Cheers

"Fanny pack"! I know how that sounds in the UK. I have one (let's call it a "waist pack" for mountain biking but the business part goes behind me. I have to say "waist packs" sure look dorky when turned around to the front. Sorry.

I've never carried any camera, no matter how small, nekkid and in a pocket. It's always in the smallest Lowepro case I can find, which makes it less "pocketable" which means it goes in a coat pocket. I've always figured exposing the camera to being ground around in there with pocket lint can't be good and the case isolates it just enough to extend its life. So far that's worked.

Honestly, I can carry it in my swimsuit. Sometimes for a good measure I throw a D300 with 300mm zoom there so I feel like a real photographer. Because as you said, the best camera is the one you can carry with you.

dkny,

I just don't even care what I look like to others. Not that I'm a slob or anything, but if I want to carry a camera in my pocket, I'm going to dang well carry a camera in my pocket. If people want to point and me and exclaim, "Look at the dork!", well, that's just fine with me. Just so long as I've got a camera with me.

All I can tell you is that the LX3 fits into my front pants pocket easily.

"Easily."

That's "pocketable" enough for me.

Well, I actually checked the actual light blue pillow on a DSLR (Canon EOS1000),

and indeed the pillow has more details than Panasonic LX3 shows, but I tend to believe this is due to the Venus ASIC processing into the camera and it is not as 'washed out' in the RAW image...

I couldn't find a raw sample for this one unfortunately :(.. Anyways, I did try to recover the detail on the LX3 pillow by postprocessing (changing luminance curve), and it was quite possible, showing it has to do mostly with local dynamic range. I tried as well to remove the border noise on the Canon G10 pillow and did not suceed at all..

Hi Rick!
I just saw the amazing photos at your website!
They look simply great! :) How do you take them ?

I just noticed indeed that at:

http://www.dxomark.com/index.php/eng/DxOMark-Sensor

they rate LX3 low-Light iso (highest ISO to get a > 30dB SNR raw image) at 83, whereas Canon G10 is at 157... Quite strange indeed given that they rate the sensor of LX3 higher than G10.., and the lens has 2/3 stop advantage on light!
:-O I'm a bit confused!

Well, to be honest I don't have LX3, but if I have, this would be the only way I would carry it. I am absolutely sure real photographers carry their cameras in swimsuits.
