The fully functional D800 AF thread - drop a line!

It seems to me that many users are complaining about the Left AF issue on the D800 series. But then again only people with real issues seem to be active on the internet - making it a bit hard to jump to conclusions. I am fully aware of the problem but I thought maybe instead of all the whining it might be fun to hear, "my D800 is allright" (there should be plenty plenty) and whenever someone complains about Nikon (real problem or not), there's always this thread for some perspective.

So drop a line, a "+1" or whatever if your D800 AF is 100%.

No problems with mine so far. Think the focus needs more fine tuning but after that, its a blast to use it. Not as difficult as deemed to be for handholding shots.

I've had my D800 about 6 months and everything works well on it I'm pleased to say with no focus, dust or build quality issues.


The exceptionally good dynamic range means that I've really been enjoying photographing cities at night since getting the new camera.

I can't yet say that my D800E is 100%, as it is currently in the shop for the second effort to correct the AF. However, I do want to say that I appreciate having this thread to refer to for encouragement as I go through the repair process. I look forward with optimism to being able to contribute a "+1" in the near future.

got an early one. I have tested the af backwards and forwards. works fine. also no white balance or green lcd tint. best camera I have ever had

Bought a returned item from Amazon (=lot cheaper), had 220 shots and left focus issue, saved about 350€.

Nikon Germany had it for two days (NPS), works perfect now.

The Sendai plant of Nikon has been producing at the rate of about 30,000 D800/D800E bodies since over a year ago (click here for the CNET story).

Even if you consider just 12 months of production (in reality, it would be longer as Nikon typically starts manufacturing bodies well before its actual launch), that would make it about 3.6 million bodies by now. Since you have heard complaints from a very small number, it is proof enough to show that a large percentage of the cameras are operating fine.

i don't consider myself the lucky type, as in someone who wins the lottery or goes out with supermodels, but i got one of the first D800s, and i never had a lick of trouble for about 10 months.

then the AF went out, so i sent it in to nikon. after a couple of weeks and a "b1" level repair to the lens release button, it was back in my hands, good as ever... none of the nikon repair horror stories for me.

nope, it's all been good. there was a bit of a learning curve at first, but like most others who've responded, it's been outstanding. those who've had problems have my sympathy, but i have had a different experience. frankly, i'm not sure luck has had a lot to do with it...

Not really. There may be a large percentage of owners who haven't tested and who don't shoot in ways that they'd become aware of left focusing problems.

If the perceived flaw does not impact such a large majority of the users, then it is not a problem for those large majority of the users. It is all about what impacts the usage of the product.

Mine works great! No problems at all. This is a very sweet camera.

Had it about 8 months now and after dialing it in this winter, I am ready to go out and have a great year. My year kicks off in two weeks with a couple of Utah trips. I am going to shoot Yellowstone this year on opening day.

Hopefully the drought is going to let up and we will all have a great year.

I bought one in December that focused really badly and I returned it for a full refund.
I bought one in January and its so amazing, I love the look and feel of the pictures especially the colour so much that I traded my d3s for a d4, now I'm on top of the world

Tested for left AF problem and found it to be good. No AF Fine-tune has been required. PDAF on my D800E is more accurate and reliable than CDAF. Noticeable improvement in AF sensitivity from the D700.

10-pin connector is solid.

No green tint.

Had some lubricant splatter early on. Did a wet cleaning and no further oily spots spotted. My D700 also had break-in lubricant splatter.

No, it's 360,000.
