Test with Sigma 80-400 EX OS DG

Maybe the Bigma then as reading previous posts you quite like it, but do you know at what focal lengths the aperature changes between f4 to f6.3

Not sure because even at 6.3 it tells the camera that it's 5.6 to maintain autofocus. As long as you don't try to shoot races at night and stick to daylight, the lens will do fine and give you all the range you need...quality is superb for a non-L lens.

If you look good you can see I started this thread about the Sigma 80-400. I can confirm it isn't fast, but it does not take 4 seconds from 1,80m to infinite, but about 2 seconds.

I think jojo must have tried out a defective copy. Mine is also fine with autofocus. Not quite as fast as my Canon lenses, but certainly no slouch.

A difference of a few milliseconds sometimes, but not always. No complaints here.

i could not believe this lens and its AF. i honestly thot it was a joke. i sincerely hope it is not representative of this lens in general, but this copy was sharp but the AF...my my my.

Hi jojo. As I posted above, mine autofocuses quite well. I had read reviews from users about it before I bought it; figured if it was really bad I'd return it. But no problems here. My 300f/4 L IS is probably a bit quicker, but not by much.

i shot with both the 80-400 DG and 300 f4 IS yesterday on a 20D, and the AF speed was simply night and day. The difference was like a turtle and a rabbit, just world's apart. i will try to assume this was a "fluke", but it left a bad taste in my mouth.

the once on a tethered 350D body in a shop fully expecting it to be a bit of a slouch I was pleasantly surprised but that not a full 'end to end' change of focus.

I did pose the question elsewhere here as to whether the AF would be different depending on the EOS camera i.e. 20D or 350D. Also, how our direct linkage cousins (unlike EOS with electronic control) with Nikon or Sigmas get on with the AF speed?
