switching to Macs

I'm a long time Windows users who is seriously contemplating switching to Mac. I shoot pictures with a Canon D30.

I'm thinking about either a 17 inch iMAC or a Power Mac G4 with a 17 inch LCD screen.

To my eye, my current CRT 17 inch Trinitron seems to be better for displaying photos, but perhaps it's just because I'm used to it. I'm interested in how others have thought about these choices and whether they've bought LCD screens and have been happy with them.

I have an Apple 17" LCD monitor and love it with my G4.

I recently replace my old iMac - which I used for scanning and printing - with an eMac and absolutely love it. If you want a 17" CRT, G4, with a CDRW for about 1200 bucks, don't forget about the eMac.

I was a long time Win user. Tried Linux for a while...it was not ready at the time...(it gets closer each day though). Anyway, switched to macs 2 years ago. I will never go back to Win! (To be honest I tried XP Pro on a brand new Vaio laptop, for a month....it crashed almost every day). It proved to myself that I made the right choice!

I have only LCD's (Samsung 17", Apple 15", TiBook, iBook) and I'm a happy camper.

Jaguar is great but like always (for a new release) with compatibility problems:

do not work anymore:

VST Tri-reader (USB)
Photosmart 1000 (USB)
Brother HL-2040 laser printer (USB)

and maybe more I did not stumble over yet!

All worked fine with 10.1.5

I do a fair amount of photo work. I do not like LCD screens. I worked with a colleague's new iMac, but recently bought the eMac. A dream, to me. (The fan is a bit noisy.) The eMac takes up little room, very clear screen, and works very well.

Though the iMacs are great, I think for photos you'll get better results with a CRT. There are a few places still closing out some of the "last seasons" G4's for a song. The nice thing about the old models is that it takes the old PC133 ram. You can buy a gig of it for about $100. The new DDR Ram is 2.5 times more expensive.

I vote for the G4 and monitor. If not, try the eMac.

A "bit" noisy?!?! This one sounds something like a 747 idling... On the plus side, it does drown out the noise from the street outside.

But I do like the screen--I'm half-thinking of switching my photo stuff from my G4 with a 15" LCD to this eMac (except that the G4 could also take a second LCD screen that we happen to have, and it has a huge internal hard disk...).

The eMac takes up little
room, very clear screen, and works very well.

I recently received a 17" iMac for home and the screen is great. I use a 22"CRT at work and I'm seeing more detail on the flat screen. One point to bear in mind though is the angle of viewing on the iMac screen - viewing at a slight angle really alters colour and brightness.

I vote for the G4 and monitor. If not, try the eMac.

The main problem with LCDs for photo work is that the contrast varies with the angle of view. This tends to be more of a problem with laptops and the iMac because the screens are easily moved, less a problem with fixed monitors like the cinema displays since once you get them set at the correct angle they will stay there. I think if you learn how to work with it properly an LCD is fine for photo work...and if you are working on photos that will be mostly be seen on computers which are more and more using LCD displays then you might as well get used to them.

hi dennis, i shoot with a canon d60 , for my photography my computer of choice is the power mac g4. you'll love the g4 dennis, if your gonna invest the money definetly get a g4 , its a awsome computer for digital imaging,the best actually.

as for moniters ,i was initially going to purchase a apple flat panel, but after comparing the flat panels to some CRT's i was convinced that certain crt's are sharper/ an gave an over all better picture. theres a really awsome CRT moniter that just came out by sony its a 21" flat screen 19.8" viewable model : cpd e 540 it costs : $ 599.99 im totally happy with this combo

That is exactly my point about going with a CRT. The LCD screens do not provide the same consistency because, as you pointed out, they change dramatically when you view them from different angles. Digitial photography is dependant on consistency.

I went from an Apple Color Sync CRT to a Samsung LCD. I much prefer the ColorSync fro editing, although I'm still getting used to the LCD.

The 17 inch iMAC is indeed great.
Make sure you get the maximum RAM.
I think it tops out at 1 GIG of RAM.
