Switching to D60 : is there any point to wait any longer ?

I wonder if near future improvement in D100 or S2 or Contax could make
a significant difference .

So far D60 is ( IMHO ) a clear winner .....
In comparison

D100 - somewhat fuzzy , no detail

S2 somewhat jagged diagonals , blooming ...

Contax - nice low ASA , full size chip , but terrible 400ASA and pricing

Despite all my Nikon glas .....

Is it realistic to think that Sigma could make a 3MP chip
that will beat D60 ?

Ok when it comes to small pictures, when the color is more of a problem
, but no way for half or full page ....

I´m starting to learn about Canon lenses .........
it is very tempting to start learning a new system on my vacation in july ....

I say YES ... ABSOLUTELY ... if the hype is even close to correct ... it could be better. BUT; I personally am WAITING to SEE. It promisses to be "as-good or better" right now ... but if the technology works ... the posibility that the near future could offer even more dramatic size increases. I think is it worth waiting to see.

Wait till we have proper reviews of the D100 and S2. One of these might be the ticket. It's too premature to start dissing the image quality on these.

The D60 still has a banding problem in some conditions, which doesn't seem to worry many people, but then the D30 sometimes has horrible banding which I've even seen in final version photos.

The Autofocus on the D60 sucks, and it has no spot metering.

These may be small points for you, and if so, great, but if not, beware.

Go with the D60 system. Even if later some manufacturer with excellent bodies and lenses adopts the Foveon chip, you can sell the Canon system.

IMO the D60 is the D-SLR of choice at the moment. But digital cameras are like computers...there's always a good reason to wait another three months for something better to come along. At some point you have to take the plunge and just accept that you won't have the latest & greatest model for very long.

I'm willing to wait 'til the feature set I want is available at a decent price. I have no compelling reason to even partially give up 35mm film at the moment. But if a D-SLR is what you need or want, and you find Canon lenses appealing, then by all means go for the D60.

I'd expect that if the Foveon technology is the real deal Canon, Nikon, etc. are already working on their own versions of it. Barring that, if a Foveon-based digicam takes off in the marketplace they may have no choice but to license the technology. In any case no single camera maker is likely to be able to dominate the market with "killer technology" for long.

I am not saying Nikon / Cannon lenses are not "better"; (I have all NIKON glass); ... but I also don't think Sigma is necessarily "mediocre"; (and I am sure Sigma would argue it).

The worse thing I have heard about Sigma lenses in the past was not concerning their optical quality; but rather their "mechanical" longivity. (however; I have recently NOT heard any references to anything but their optics)

BUT; even if their mechanical ruggedness is not sufficient for a WORKING PROFESSIONAL that has a camera in his hands 24/hrs/day; (I suppose that would also mean NIGHTS so I "wonder" what he is "doing"); I suggest it may still be adequate for an "average" user; FOR A LOWER PRICE.

Ya Know ... if you stand back and look at it for a "value" standpoint .. the Sigma SA-9 is an AMAZING value .... it offers for $500 what it cost $1000+ from Nikon. I am STILL PISSED at Nikon for abandoning the 8008s. That was a $600 camera that offered MULTIPLE EXPOSURE and 1/250 sync speed ... BOTH ARE REQUIREMENTS for me ... The N90 had 1/250 but you needed the additonal $500 Multi/Data/Back for multiple exposures.

So from a COMPETITION standpoint ... I want Sigma to SUCCEED to keep Canon/Nikon on their toes; keep prices lower; and IF IT WORKS; to adopt a similar technology.

I agree with your basic premise, so I ordered a D60. It will probably take three to four weeks, maybe longer, to ship. If I hear anything in the meantime that makes me want to switch to Fuji or Sigma, I'll cancel the order. If not, I won't have to start the ordering process after waiting ANOTHER month or so.

You will not be making any mistake buying a D60. But if the question is should I wait? Well your comments about the D100 are wrong...Wait till someone has a V1.0 software release to make a proper judgement and the S2 right now looks better then the D60 to many of us.

If you can afford to wait this is the year to wait Sigma, D100 non-prototype and a actual released S2. Lots to consider.

I'm looking hard at buying now too. My call would be to WAIT and see what the D100 appears to be when it's finally on the street and with more demo pix online to review.

D-60 is a great choice . . . but, Nikon makes good stuff--so why not wait. It won't be long.

I've seen a number of posts that bag on the D-60's focus . . .but, it appears to that the D100's will Nikon's equivalent lower tech version.

Both cameras are hitting the same price-point and drawing on technological equivalents of each manufacturer.

It make come down to hold both in your hands to see what FEELS best and a couple nuances like WHAT you'll shoot. I'm doing sports, so I may be pushed to a D1h or a even a 1D . . .

Also, see what you "get in the box". I'm hearing Canon may bundle more regular gotta-haves, i.e., charges, batteries etc. in their kits.

I'd have to disagree with this. The D60s autofocus is the same one that was used in the APS IX cameras. It's not even as good as any of the autofocus systems from canon's 35mm bodies, even the bottom-of-the-range models, and even models 10 years old.

The focus assist light is bright white, which can be distracting to the subjects.

I can't say anything on the D100's system yet, but I hightly doubt that it will be anywhere near as bad as the D60s.

It is incredible; still I can't believe it!

A friend of mine showed me yesterday evening some photos (printed with agfa lab 2, at 8 x 12 inches) taken with D60 and Fuji S1 (yes S1, no S2).
Same subjects, same light conditions, same exposure values....
...
Same results!!! No visible difference!!!

I hope D100 (or S2) would be better...
