Strange lines in an image

Hi, I'm new to the forum, though I have had an X30 from new and before that I had an X20 from new, so maybe twelve years in total. It isn't the camera I use most often (usually an M4/3 with a long lens for insects) but I love it - occasionally playing with street photos, architecture, domestic macros or whatever.

Yesterday, I took some shots which gave an unusual effect, something I have never seen before. The attached image - edited to the extreme to highlight the strange effect - shows lines apparently converging on the lower edge of the image. The image is a jpeg from the camera but the RAW file has the same lines. Has anyone else seen anything similar? What might be the cause? I'm a bit miffed because I like the shot

but it is spoiled by those lines. The same effect appeared in a few shots taken around the same time (similar composition) but was absent in others (different composition) taken before and after.

Thanks for your thoughts.

I have never seen that in an image before but something about the regularity of the lines suggests that there may be an interaction between a polarising filter and the sensor. Are you using a filter of that nature?

Cheers,

Allan.

If the problem is caused by a linear polarizing filter, simply removing it should solve it.

I have had a couple similar instances but not the same. Mine, I believe, are an example of "banding", caused by not enough information for a smooth transition of colors. Yours are something I've never seen.

We need more information. The orientation of the lines suggests it is not a sensor issue, so was there additional glass in front of the lens? I can't think of a filter that would do this, but there may be some kind of interference effect taking place here.
