Hey,

Just wondering if anyone else has experienced strange AUTO choices from the X100 vi?

I exclusively use the camera in Aperture Priority, I wont be doing any manual shooting because I want the camera to remain a fast point and shoot that that captures candid moments (I'm using it as a C-cam on a documentary film shoot where it'll hang around my neck while I'm dealing with 2 professional cinema cameras).

When in Aperture priority I have noticed that the Auto selection for ISO is ISOA2 and even when pointed at a bright sky it will select 3200 (see image), which is crazy.

I've also noticed that the fastest the shutterspeed will go to in in this mode is 2000ss (despite having capability of 4000ss), and the 2000 is maxed out in red colour on the LCD display.

This means I can't shoot wide open at f2 in daylight without the image blowing out highlights, in fact I can't even shoot at f8 properly. I want to be able to use the exposure compensation dial so that I can expose to the right or left when I want, but with the setting's right now the camera's super limited.

I've obviously made an error somewhere in my settings, but I've had a good play around and I can't see what I've done wrong?!

Any thoughts?

Thanks!

Check your AUTO ISO settings. Default sensitivity should be however low you want to go. I use the minimum there, 125.

Set the max to whatever you are most comfortable with. Around 6400 or higher you'll start seeing noise in images.

Minimum shutter speed is whatever you want to shoot. Fast moving subjects will of course need faster shutter speeds if you want to eliminate blur.

It doesn't seem from the photograph that you are depressing the shutter button . The actual iso doesn't show until you half press the shutter button. Up until then it shows the hightest iso that you have set as possible.

If you want to shoot wide open in broad daylight, don't forget to use the ND filter.

Cheers,

The leaf shutter is limited to 1/2000” at wider apertures (and the bokeh can get weird a high shutter speeds too). If you set MS+ES, the electronic shutter will take over automatically when necessary and give you up 1/32,000” without needing to hassle with the (less than stellar) built-in ND filter.

When using Auto-ISO, the camera will display the max ISO setting unless the AE is locked - seeing the actual shooting ISO is typically accomplished with a half-press of the shutter button.

Note: the camera will override your minimum SS setting when the max ISO setting is reached. It’s generally good practice to set base ISO to ISO 12800 limits with a different min. SS for each preset to avoid conflicts. The camera will always use the lowest possible ISO and highest SS within your preset limits.
