SPP 6.2.1 update and new firmware for DP1Q and DP2Q

Greetings

Well I've been using SPP 6.2.1 for a few days now and WOW does it work great!! It even PRINTS!!! (SPP6.2 wouldn't print on any of my machines I was getting ready to buy a D750) I guess my email to Sigma Japan helped? Maybe) Hurray for me. It's very fast and very stable on my Windows 7 Pro machine, although I haven't used it on my Mac's yet I'm having to much fun using it on my Windows and printing using SPP6.2.1

The b&w is great.

Thank you Sigma For doing this and not giving up.

Have fun and enjoy

However I completely understand why these things can happen - timescales, budgets, staff changes etc. etc. If I had to wait for months (years?) before I was able to get my hands on the Quattro i.e. they spent the time, budget etc. to get the 'quality right' - I'd be even more frustrated.
I've come to the conclusion that the way they are doing it is the best compromise. If you want to wait until everything is 'perfect' then wait :) - but let us others take it 'as seen' and enjoy the pros/cons.
It is not the best compromise. If they can't afford to make it bug-free and work just about perfectly with their sensor, then open-source it. Take advantage of all the camera-interested programmers, who are capable of helping out *if* they have the source.

There is no competitive risk with this - for the source code details of foveon-specific processing cannot help the competitors in any way. Their sensors are too different. With such a setup there would be several versions - some more experimental, and one published by sigma where they basically pick the stable parts from the open development.

The sigma-global site mentions one more improvement to both DP1Q and DP2Q:
  • It has improved the focusing speed and its precision in AF mode in low light conditions.
This seems to be the case, my DP2Q now finds focus in situations where earlier Sigmas are useless.

I routinely check the new Sigma Photo Pro Versions if they
are useable for processing Merrill Photos.

I just compared processing speed of a DP1 Merrill Photo of
the new version with the old 5.5.3 version on my MacBook
Pro Retina 15 with SSD:

SPP 5.3.3: about 8 seconds

SPP 6.2.1: variable, between 11 and 15 seconds

As it is, I won't use SPP 6.2.1, as it just slows down my
Workflow. It is pitiful, that Sigma cannot get their Software
act together.

Greetings,

Robert
