Computer operating systems are made by large teams of people with deadlines. Usually this means that they are made at the expense of efficiency, robustness and security. Effectively, we are the testers of computer products - when we find a bug, the relevant software company fixes it. When someone finds a way to exploit the system, it also needs fixing.
There are numerous ways in which we must keep our systems up to date to protect ourselves from instability or malicious attack. The three most important are:
1 - Anti-virus software, kept up to date and running.
2 - Patching (code which fixes problems or plugs newly discovered security holes), for example using Windows Update to ensure that you keep up to date
3 - Service packs, which usually contain a rollup of bug-fixes and security updates for the relevant software package.
All software is updated or replaced at sometime, so it only benefits you to keep an eye out for what is new. If nothing else, check releases for your anti virus each day you use your computer, and let Windows check for it's own updates. This way you'll at least be (mostly) protected from malicious code from email or the internet.
SP2 mentioned was Service Pack 2 for Windows XP. It represents a new way of approaching security, and so far seems to be a worthwhile addition to Window XP. The only real problem you may encounter is if you have some old software which isn't compatible, and this may also reduce your computer speed. I would advise it, but... no buts, if you have XP and some hard drive space, install it (you can uninstall it if you discover a major problem, but make sure you allow it to back up to old configuration - hence the requirement for space).
Lastly, killer jpegs... here's the MS article, it doesn't make easy reading for all:

If you have any questions about any of this, ask and I'll try to help.

In order to get the most recent security updates installing SP2 was
