Sony A7R V doesn’t tether via USB-C hub (works fine with direct connection)

Hey everyone, I’m running into a frustrating tethering issue with my Sony A7R V.

When I connect the camera directly to my iPad Pro M2 or Mac using a USB-C to USB-C cable, it works flawlessly.

But if I try going through a USB-C hub, the iPad doesn’t recognize the camera at all.

I’ve tried multiple hubs and cables—powered and unpowered—and only the direct connection works.

Oddly enough, I also tested my Sony A7R III, and it works just fine even through the same USB-C hub.

So I’m trying to figure out:
  • Is this a known limitation with the A7R V?
  • Could it be related to firmware or power delivery issues?
  • Has anyone successfully tethered an A7R V via a USB-C hub, and if so, which exact model of hub/cable worked?
Would love to know if others have run into this and found a solution. Thanks in advance!

It’s just a guess but you might need a thunderbolt hub such as Caldigit etc. It might be better to ask this question in the Mac forum here on DPR.

Can you explain why you feel a need to use a hub? Surely there's not a big hassle using a direct cable?

A USB-C connection requires one end to be in-charge. I wonder if the iPad can only be in charge when connected directly to something like a camera. Attach it to a hub, and the iPad does not know to take charge.

That's my guess.
