I found a site (Carbonite) that will store all your files (txt, Photo - all formats, etc
unlimited space for $50.00 @ yr.

The initial upload backup to their servers is dependent on your files (mine took 6 days) but it works in the background so you can continue with whatever you are working on. Once the initial upload is complete it takes (in my case) several minutes a night while I am sound asleep.

All files are coded (yellow or green dot) to let you know what has/hasn't been backed up.

I still use external HD's at home but now I don't worry about any file loss at all.

I've been using Carbonite since last September without problems. My online backup is 147gb which took more than a week to upload. I've been able to restore a few files I screwed up , but nothing major. Trouble with all of my backup methods is I don't really know if they are reliable because luckily I haven't had a failure situation yet.

What happens if you lose your hi-speed modem? The power goes out?
147GB of private data on someone elses server don't sound to good here
when or if you can't access it! I'd invest in a couple external drives and
backup your data to take and access when you need it. Throw them
into a drawer somewhere so you don't overwrite if thats a problem. ;-)

I also have been using Carbonite for close to 2 years - I use it in conjunction with external hard drives. My only complaint is that if you want to free up hd space and you delete a file or photo from your hard drive Carbonite will also deleted it from their storage - so you need to keep all files and photos of your drives . I would like to have an option to tell them keep this file or photo on their server.

It isn't my only form of backup, so I don't expect it to be very catastrophic. It is just a very convenient way to get an off site copy of recent additions. That is what most people risk with their backup strategies.

I for one don't or won't consider someone elses server for storing
my data. Being cheap, lazy and using the most convenient often is
a byte in the ass for grief later.

I was away for a week, so sorry for the late response.

It is not the only form of backup I use. It's not even the only off site backup I use, but it will be the most current backup. So, if there is a fire and my home burns to the ground, I have a good chance that I will be able to restore all of my pictures. Of course I prefer the off site hard drive because it is much easier and faster to restore from.

That is the point I was trying to make.

Hi Don,
I researched the option of backing up to other online servers and it
seems to be a viable option for some. I have far too much data in my
case for it to work reasonably. Good that it works for you. Backing up
stuff in any way is good.

Regards.

I can't back up all of it either, but a directory structure that allows me to only try to backup newer images (YYYY/MM/YYYY-MM-DD-Model). I backup a little over a years worth.

If that adds up to too much space, then I agree with you. It would become an error prone process because it is too easy to forget to update the backup set. As it stands, I only do that once a year (take out 2006, add 2008).

I will add that I am currently having some difficulties with Mozy which may stem from how LR handles preview images. It is working, but I am less happy with the configuration tool and how well it works at this point.

From their Terms of Use page at http://carbonite.com/terms/

"Carbonite will never examine the contents of your files for any other purpose, and no information about a file's content, other than its type (e.g. digital photos, word processing document, etc.) and size, will ever be collected, tracked or stored by Carbonite. Contents of all files are encrypted before they are transmitted to Carbonite's data center."

Pretty nice commitment.
