SMC Macro-Takumar 4/100 mm

I just bought one of these, in very good condition. Anyone have any experience with this M42-lens, it's the first screw mount macro I managed to find.

I'll certainly be taking it out for some testing very soon, Alf. I'll post some shots here as soon as I have time.

Still, it's weird that you can hardly find any screw mount macro lenses out there, I've been trying to get one for at least six months...

I have two M42 macros lenses, but both are zooms, not primes.

They are the Vivitar 28-200mm f3.5-f5.3 macro and the Vivitar 35-200mm f3-f4.5 macro.

Well, I do have several M42 zooms that have a 'macro' setting, is that what you mean? But if so, then those are not dedicated macro lenses, like for instance the Kiron 2.8/105 mm. or this Pentax...

This is true...But I now have a Nikon Micro-Nikkor 200mm f4 IF which is a lot sharper than my two Vivitar zooms and it offers bigger magnification too.

It does'nt do 1:1 macros unless you use extension rings though...Nikon make one specially for this lens but I use a set of Nikon extension tubes.

I owned the 50mm version and it was as sharp as my Sigma 70mm macro at macro distances. Your's should be as good. As you found out, they're in very high demand. No floating elements though, so don't expect miracles at infinity.

Well, as I only paid € 60 for it, I would be quite pleased even if there are no miracles at infinity, as long as it does perform decently at up to say 3 metres!

Pentax 50mm and 100mm F4 lenses are the very best macro lenses when they arrived and even now. It is very difficult to find them as owners want to keep them. Also in ebay you have to pay way over 200$ to get one. As your version is SMC it works well with modern cameras. With SD14 it should provide excellent pictures.

Do i need a m42 adapter to use it on my SD10?

1) Does it mean i can use the lenses on my SD10 (except those with intruding rear-parts)
2) Does it meanI can use the macro tubes and bellows on my sd10

3) how does one use the slidecopier on the APS-sized SD10? (i also have the 50 EX Macro)

I'm a total nitwit to these kinds of photography.
The general question is what can do with all this.

I own the 50mm and it is indeed very good. It's the only M42 lens that I use often (in fact, the M42-adapter is on it all the time).

One of the best bargains I have ever made at only about € 17.-.

It looks your father was a real photographer, too.

What you have found is quite a treasure. I know one such treasure box with ie SMC 400mm f2.8, but there is a huge price tag on that one.

I think it is a very good idea to get M42 adapter and start testing. With the bellows you cane get very small subjects photographed.

If you want to use Sigma macro it is not that simple. Reverse adapters are needed and there is not many around. As the Pentax macro is very good you will survive with one adapter. You propably will find a very usable Pentax M42/PK adapter in a photoshop that has some history. It is only little loose, but works fine.

... a man of details he was. But i think he must have lost interest in the macro work, (never saw him work with it as far as i remember) maybe the trial and error proces involved cost too much time. Or he just used it as a slide-copier only?
If he had lived to see the digital era maybe he would have refound his interest.

Time to dust it off and give it a second life.

Now i can try to digitalize the old slides (i was talking about some time ago). And maybe take Macro more serious.

Assuming you mean those M42 mount bellows, then yes you do.

You can use all of those Pentax lenses on your SD10, with or without the bellows via an M42-SA adapter (providing of course that they are all M42 mount lenses).

Later Bayonet mount Pentax lenses (PK mount) will fit onto the SA mount without needing an adapter as long as you remove the protruding rear parts...The AA lever will need to be cut off flush with the base of the lens and the moulded plastic projection on the bezel ring which is actually the AA lever protector needs to be trimmed off with a sharp Stanley or similar knife, then they should all fit straight on.

2) Does it meanI can use the macro tubes and bellows on my sd10

Yes, you can use the M42 extension tubes and bellows on your SD10 via an M42-SA adapter.

The same way you use it on FF cameras, but you may find you have some vignetting to worry about.

The best quality adapter is the Japanese JTAT version:

But there are two other versions available...The PMBAA (Polish-Made, Black Anodised Aluminium) and the PMCPB (Polish-Made Chrome plated Brass) versions.
The PMBAA version is available on ebay:

The PMCPB version only costs about £10 more but its very rare and so not easy to find.

I currently have a total of four M42-SA adapters...1x CSM422 (made by the long defunked D-shell), 1x JTAT version and 2x PMCPB versions...The only version I have'nt got is the cheapo PMBAA version, though I might be tempted to get one just to try it.
