Sigma Foveon and/or another alternative/additional camera system?

Hello:

Just a bunch of questions, thoughts and/or comments?

I have currently a Sigma camera system, been advertising for sale.

I have also alternative camera systems, and was curious, are others stayingwith Sigma, or possibly considering the Sony path (specifically because ofthe Sigma MC-11 (SA-E mount adapter)?

Shame that Sigma SA mount lenses can not be adapted/mount to Fuji XF mount.

Foveon definitely has a special “look” to the photos, depending to on post processing.

Sadly - we know with shooting in color - the Foveon (Quattro - [non-H]) sensor does notdo well beyond the ISO 100 setting.

Just curious, where others for the sake of discussion, are doing with their plans moving into the future with Sigma?

Thanks for your time reading and posting,

Have a nice day,

Ed

I am keeping my sdqh. I am looking at getting a Panasonic S1 along with the adapter so i can use my SA glass on it.

I actually had forgotten about that potential avenue being available.

It will come as no surprise, Ed, that I for one will remain firmly embedded in the the pre-Merrill past and stick with what I have.

Most who have a Foveon also have a Bayer. Foveon is a very specialized sensor that does one thing better than Bayer, but for all other uses Bayer is better. I have Foveon and Sony, but if I had the spare $3,700 I love a Panasonic S1R.

Hi Ed: Thanks for sharing your thoughts Sigma and alternate camera systems. As for me, I am a Sigma guy for the time being, hopeful that a full frame foveon is in the not to distant future. If that does not happen, I may look toward a medium format camera as a possible next step?

Hello Larry:

Thanks for your viewpoints and comments.

Which camera would you be looking into, if pursuing the "Medium Format"?

I'm keeping my Sigma stuff. It would have been challenging to sell lenses in particular before the SA mount was given the sendoff, now those prices have dropped further. Might as well keep the lenses.

I have no intention of going Sony.

I am hoping that Sigma releases their updated Foveon (or, Foveon style) camera and sensor.

I wouldn't mind seeing a much more stills oriented camera with a nice Bayer sensor in it from Sigma. Maybe even a strictly monochrome camera. Would I buy one? Maybe. I'm not really drawn to the fpL enough to buy one.

At this point, with nothing of real or immediate interest to me on the horizon from the Sigma camera department, I am back to waiting to see what Canon decides to release for the 5DSr replacement.

No immediate pressing need to buy, though. Canon's sendoff of the EF lenses has dropped the floor on those resale prices too, and the new ones aren't inexpensive.

I've got a DP2M which I'm very happy with. Compact, well built and extremely sharp. If it ever breaks I'd probably try and find another.

I have a Nex 7 with a collection of lenses but only my 16mm Rokinon is as sharp as I like. The rest are pretty disappointing.

I also have a Panasonic F1000 which is very versatile, but it also leaves something to be desired in the sharpness department.

These day I mostly go out with the DP and my phone, and they seem to do the job.

There isn't one. It doesn't exist.

I thought about selling my gear, but I can't as there isn't anything that matches the Foveon for IQ.
I have also alternative camera systems, and was curious, are others stayingwith Sigma, or possibly considering the Sony path (specifically because ofthe Sigma MC-11 (SA-E mount adapter)?
I have the use of other systems. Sony isn't an option, buying a Sony would be like buying a TV or VCR machine and if that were the case I'd buy an LG. You can spend your life looking but never find anything as good as the Foveon.
Shame that Sigma SA mount lenses can not be adapted/mount to Fuji XF mount.

The IQ the look is why we use the Sigma/Foveon. I don't do much PP and when I do I only use SPP.
Sadly - we know with shooting in color - the Foveon (Quattro - [non-H]) sensor does notdo well beyond the ISO 100 setting.
Where did you get/hear that CR$P? The Foveon can only do ASA 100?????? What????

Here are some shots shot at ISO 400 to ISO 3200 zero PP if any was done it was done in SPP only. So let's put this 100 ISO to rest. RIP ISO 100-200 junk.

Not going anywhere, but I'm not buying any more gear as I have to much already. I may sell a piece or two over time.

Roger,

Do you have "Auto Binning" activated or left unticked in SPP preferences ?

HI Ed: At this point it would probably be the 907X hasselblad or one of the 50 mP Fujis. I'll wait and see what come down the line in the next year or so. I am in no hurry and do not really see the need for another camera.

Hello!
Sigma Foveon and/or another alternative/additional camera system?
I have had alternative/additional cameras since many years. Yet I still consider Sigma my favorite. If I have time and patience to go outside and do nothing but take pictures I will always take the SD1. As long as it works. Also when I will ever go on a holiday again, the SD1 will certainly come along.

But when I go to work or anywhere I cant't easily carry an SLR camera with accessories, I will take along my Panasonic Micro Four Thirds camera. The current one is the Lumix DMC-G80. Usually I have a fast wide-angle "pancake" lens attached to it. It is so small and lightweight that I really always take it with me. One battery charge lasts longer than the SD card, you never have to worry about that (I hope that one day Sigma will learn how to make a camera with decent battery life...). I will rather leave the mobile phone at home than this camera.

And for my modest attempts at really low light astronomy photography I have a full-frame Canon DSLR, an EOS 6D, the one that supposedly has the least sensor noise. When it is not attached to a telescope I use it with a Sigma Art lens of course :-) That is an excellent camera in it's own right with features we Sigma photographers can only dream of like GPS, WiFi, live view and full remote contol on a mobile phone, focus bracketing, ... you name it.

Should Sigma ever cease making cameras that appeal to me I will probably go towards a mirrorless full-frame Canon. Sony makes good cameras also, but for some reason I can not even specify I am not interested.

Regards

Max

Hi Ed,

I've been using a Sigma SD15 and a Sony A7Riv for seascapes. For traveling, I used a Sigma DP1 for night scenes, where Foveon color shines. I am considering adding a Sony A7C for traveling and other usages.

I'm mostly shooting Fuji but keeping my sd Quattro and dp0 for now, mostly for nostalgia's sake. I have a 24mm F1.4 Art and an old 18-250 SA-mount for the sd.

It will be a pleasant surprise to see a full frame Foveon, or any new Foveon sensor, or even a rebuild using an existing design (sd Quattro with L-mount for example). But I'm not holding my breath.

Since you can downsize a 60mp fp L image to 1/4 original pixels and exceed Merrill quality even at pixel level, with the same 15mp pixel count, I wonder why Sigma would want to continue with Foveon development.

Foveon definitely has a "special look" to it, but I'm sure Sigma could make fp L images look the same if they wanted to.

The high ISO capability of Foveon has been and will continue to be debated here, and I am one of those poor souls who does not find a lot of dynamic range available in this sensor. My earliest Fuji (X-E1) far exceeds Foveon in terms of shadow preservation and low noise. Not Foveon colors though...

I've got a DP1M. Cool camera, but it has limited functionality for me due to lack of a viewfinder. I also have a SD Quattro--non H. I'm probably going to buy the SA mount 14-24 lens so I can have decent wide angle on the Quattro. If an L mount FFF comes out, I can use the 14-24 with an adapter. So I'm not really risking anything. Since 2004 I've shot 80% Bayer (Nikon) and 20% Foveon mainly because my main lens is the f/2.8 24-70 which didn't really exist in the DX format world. Now that Sigma makes excellent lenses across all focal lengths, I would be happy to get a FFF and pair with an L mount 24-70 lens.

Because Foveon is unique and produces stunning image quality.

I don't think that's true, Tom. I have a series of macro shots taken with the old SD14 and the 70mm f/2.8 EX macro lens that I really don't believe could be equaled with just about any camera - right up to MF. I'll publish one of these shots (full size) here later.

I can achieve the same IQ with the same lens and the SD1 Merrill or the DP3 Merrill. And I can do with it a single shot -- no need for pixel shift.
