Shutter speed locked at 200 with flash

This is the highest speed for flash I believe. If you have an external flash, the highest sync is 1/90 I think...but if you get a speedlite 420EX or 550EX, then you can use FP (high speed) flash sync and sync up to 1/4000.....a great feature.
It would be locked in the picture modes (I dunno if it is in of
them because I don't use them) because at shutter speeds higher
than 200, the shutter does not expose the entire sensor to the
flash in the same instant. A higher shutter speed would block part
of the sensor from the flash.
Is there a reason the shutter speed can't go above 200 when you
have the flash activated?

With the FP on the flash switched on, the camera will sync up to 1/4000 in most modes.
Thanks again!

yes with high speed sync you can do up to 1/4000s but the range decrease. Increasing the ISO help to compensate.

I think 1/4000s it overkill for birds, 1/1000s should be fine.

Canon told me at F5.6, 105 mm ISO 400 I would get around 10 feet of range for a FULL exposure in darkness..for fill in the range would be greater than 10 feet but they don't calculate the light fall off so I'll have to try it myself. I will also use the better beamer and probably gain more than enough light for fill in purpose.

i have the 550 but i can't manage to get the camera shooting faster
than 1/200, where is this high speed sync mode? how can i set it?
Push the + and - buttons at the same time. Then, adjust the camera
to a mode to use more than 1/200th.

Jason
thank you, it works.

by pushing simultaneously them twice i get a symbol composed by 3 arrows, the last of them black. what mode is this? how could canon print such a poor instruction manual?

I saw this bird photographer with these things attached to two of his flashes. His setup is a Nikon film SLR with two flashes + two BB (now that I know what they're called) and a 500mm lens. I may give the BB a try myself.
(5) The BB offers you an additional 2-3 f-stops because it sends
the light a distance of more than twice that of the flash alone.
ok that does it! 2-3 stop, more than twice the distance of the
flash alone...sounds really good :)))

I will ge getting one for sure.
If you wish to find out more about the BB, Google "Better Beamer"
and read about the experience of others.
hmm I did not see any mention of a flash there? or did I miss
somethign?

I can use 320 shutter speed max, as the curtain makes the sensor half covered-black- when I use faster speeds.
