Shutter release for the D200?

..the MC-20 is relatively compact for carrying. The bad part of all of this is, there aren't any Nikon remotes available in stock. For that matter, most of their accessories aren't available. Still can't pick up the UR-5 so you can mount the SB-R200 flashes safely on the 60mm micro. I'm using mine on my good old 55mm f/2.8 micro for now and it's fine, but seems silly to come out with a product that most folks will use with the 60mm and have no way to mount it safely.

Anyway, there are many MC-20's on eBay at what seems to be more reasonable prices than the MC-36 relative to new prices. I got my MC-20 in mint condition, still in the box with all paperwork for $75. The MC-36 is selling for $60+, which is over retail.

Have a great day

I have always thought that some of Nikon's email people have no clue what they're talking about.
the MC-20...MC-TWENTY!!!!! is the older product.
the MC-36 replaces the MC-20!!!!! NOT THE MC-30!

MC-20's functions are all duplicated and enhanced with the 36. Is it big? a llittle...but if you want timed, interval, etc. etc. remote release, then the MC36 is the best there is. I use it for timed, bulb count-up and more.
Tom: The MC-30 is an older product so it would not be on the
website. The MC-36 replaces the MC-30.

Maybe I am a grouchy old man but what the heck....Do they produce
the MC-30 anymore?

The mc-36 is massive in size and peice...come on Nikon!

You make sense....MC-30 still in production but nowhere to be found except ebay.

BH sells them for 54.95 new. I get free shipping.

So what did I do?.....paid 59.53 for a used one on ebay.

supply and demand

Get the MC-30. Works perfect. Call Competitive Cameras in Dallas, TX Toll Free (800) 688-0211 on Monday morning. They have them in stock and will probably ship to you.

I have one and have used it with my D70, and that is correct. In bulb, you press the remote button once to open the shutter and again to close it.

There's no place like 127-0-0-1!

My solution for a remote was the Adidt M1N1, i bought it for 20€ here in Finland (didn't feel like putting out 60-70€ for a Nikon original piece of plastic). Works like a charm, includes half-press, shutter lock, cable length is about 70cm.

My current problem is where to find a cheap alternative for an extension cable, the Nikon MC-21 is around 60-70€ also, and that's a whole lot for a simple cable.

The MC 30 is still in production $125 Australian a lot for a basic on/off shutter release.

I spoke with the distributor this morning. He indicated that they should have the first product in a week. From there it will go to major camera houses. They have several products.

IR remote for the D50, D70 - Not sure why.

IR remote for Canon and Nikon. Details will be available in a week or two on exactly they work. They will work on IR and the 10 pin connector. The receiver/transmitter combo will retail for $89. The IR will work from the front and back of camera. Oh, functions may include instant/delayed, AF and bulb.

There is a second item called the Zigview. Maybe some have seen it in Europe. Attaches to the viewfinder on many camera models. Has built in video camera, remote with intervalometer and movement (vibration?) sensing. Retail about $279.

Sorry for sketchy info but must wait for staight info. I will update. I also suggested that they work with vendor to produce cost effective 10 pin extension cord and 10 pin conn to cord.

Then there is the cheap chinese knockoff for $10

What is a D200 user to do?
The cheap knock off is absolutely fine. Works as designed, no whistles... well except for the fact that you get a 3.5mm port for connecting more than one remote shutter release cord (e.g. 3D photography).

The only annoying thing about the cheapo is that it doesn't screw into the D200 (like the Nikon one does), but instead you need to squeeze it into the camera...

The only negative point in my opinion with ML-L3 IR remote and D70 is it can be operated from front of the camera only.
AFS,
Thanks for the info. I was worried when I first read the post, I
am in the same boat needing a remote for my D200. I'll look for
the MC-30 too. On the D200 It's too bad Nikon did away with the
sweet IR remote setup used on the D70. I just bought a ML-L3 IR
remote for my D70 and it is super, small, about the size of two
quarters side by side, and resides in a little flat pouch that is
attached to the camera neck strap.

I've both D200 and D70. It's a pity D200 does not come with a
built-in IR receiver for remote trigger like the D70.

Wondering what Nikon's rationale is for omitting that.
I have both the D70 and the D200 and always found the IR receiver to be a worthless feature for me (I don't take many photos of myself) and never found anything else to use it for...it was unreliable (and you had to be a contortionist) to use it for a standard cable release. If Nikon wants to get serious about wireless release, they should build an RF one, not IR. RF would allow you to be out of the line of sight and would even work through walls. THEN, it'd at least be useful from behind the camera. But, for my needs, a standard, inexpensive, wired cable release is a must...if they want to expand on that, fine, but it adds no value for me.

Yes, it would be nice to buy a simple cable release from Nikon for a reasonable price. If they are available 3rd party for $10, then why charge $60 for essentially the same thing. And why they went with IR rather than a remote cable on the D70 is a wonder. I used the IR feature for sunsets. Even there it was an awkward position to do shutter release. Should have been in the rear.

i don't know the if remote was kind of nice for night shooting so u didn't get any camera shake...

The ADIDT M1 Remote Cord on eBay (item Item number: 7601220455) or similar, works just fine. Cost 1.95 + 13.99 shipping (from New York, not Hong Kong). Has the same features as Nikon's cord (half shutter; bulb). Works on my D200 and D100, no problem.

You could get the Adidt R3 like I did, I have a MC-20 plus a clone MC-30 but I wanted something for longer distances.

I had seen them on ebay but I didn't want to buy one without knowing if they were any good, then I found out a friend of mine had one for his Canon and said it was great so I ordered one and I like it so far, rated for 100 meters wireless and also works as a wired remote.

If you search these forums you will find some other users also, you can get them for Nikon or Canon.

I am SO leary of stuff like that (where shipping is 7 times the cost of the item). Makes me think you get an empty box and when you complain, they happily refund your purchase price (less shipping) of $1.95. I NEVER trust such auctions. Have you actually received the item you mentioned from that seller? (I guess if there is a reliable seller for the item that people have been successfully using, then the item might warrant consideration.)
