I was sniffing around MPB’s offerings of the EOS R5. I asked them if they provided shutter counts for the items they have for sale. Their answer follows. What do you think about this? Should a person buy a used R5 without concern for its shutter count?

MPB does not provide shutter counts for any mirrorless cameras, including the Canon R5, because these counts are inaccurate and record the number of button presses rather than actual shutter actuations. Since mirrorless cameras like the Canon R5 do not have a physical shutter mechanism, they do not endure the same faults or shutter failure as cameras with a mechanical shutter, making the shutter count less important information and not an indication of the camera's condition.

But most mirrorless cameras do have a physical shutter mechanism. The R5 certainly does Not sure why they would respond that way.

Anyway, when I read my shutter count with ShutterCount app on my mac, it says "Shutter Count - Including Electronic".

FWIW it IS a ball park number and doesn't give me the breakdown of mechanical and electronic actuations. But I know over 99% of my actuations would have been mechanical

I've had the camera since launch but I rarely shoot events, sports, etc. If the camera was use by photographers who shoot events, weddings, sports regularly, I could imagine the actuations to be much higher.

Whoever wrote that is being disingenuous or simply does not know how most mirrorless cameras (certainly not the R5) work. I would certainly be concerned with the shutter count. I would shop elsewhere where a shutter count can be obtained.

Shuttercount I believed used to just show the mechanical. But shuttercount pro will show the count for each type (when you look at the pie chart).

If you're that concerned with shutter count just buy new.

If you want to save money buy used from someone like KEH, MPB or B&H that have good warranty and return policies.

Thanks. That really helpful.
