With my new 72mm Fuji X series cap finally on my camera's protective filter and my Breakthrough cap as backup and a Zeiko plastic universal LCD protector on the back screen of the camera, I've decided to change my custom settings for the camera. I decided to save manual exposure mode onto Custom mode because this is the only mode that lets me access 30 second shutter speeds up to ISO 3200 (all other modes are limited to 4 seconds-- which is still very decent and better than other cameras I've used, other than the S9900W which lets me go to 8 second shutter speeds at all ISOs and in all modes.)
So I've got the hang of the settings I want to use with the S1.
I programmed focus mode onto the function button. That gives me a way to get AF lock by switching between center focus half press and manual focus and gives me the added bonus of confirming focus via focus peaking. I like that. The only issue is that the first time I did that and tried to use it for some reason the camera reset back to default settings. No idea why that happened but my battery was low so maybe that was why? I reprogrammed all the settings and it hasn't happened since. I also want to experiment with tracking autofocus and continuous autofocus, do they work well with this camera, even at the tele end?
With the ISO the first setting in the menu it's almost like a second function button so that's what I use the menu for.
Because the S1 menu, very much like the S9900W menu, is so simple, there isn't really anything else to program. I keep the camera in silent mode, I have the side zoom lever set to L for fine control (but it doesn't seem to make much of a difference either way), I have finepix color set to Chrome and metering set to spot.
This camera is sort of a cross between the HS50 and the S9900W. Since I have all 3 cameras I'm going to love to test them against each other. It has the raw mode that the HS50 has (although I don't use raw mode but as soon as I install the Fuji software off the CD I'd love to try it.)
The layout and scarcity of extra buttons makes it more similar to the S9900W than the HS50, although in burst mode the S9900W has more options (the S9900W has the electronic shutter modes of 60 fps and 120 fps which the S1 lacks.) The lens on the S1 is better than the lens on the S9900W though and more like the HS50 lens with f/5.6 as the brightest f stop at the tele end. The S9900 is f/6.5 at the tele end for the brightest f stop and is limited to only being able to select three f stops at any focal length.
Besides the lack of extra buttons and no filter threads on the lens (which isn't an issue for me since I got a kit that comes with a filter adapter and the Fuji 72mm protector as well as an extra Fuji OEM battery and the Fuji camera bag), the only other issue I have is the battery takes 6 full hours to charge in camera! And that's with the USB to AC power adapter. It might take even longer connected to the USB port on my computer. Does anyone have any experience with any external chargers? Do they take less time to charge the OEM batteries than charging in camera-- and are they safe to use? Is the OEM external charger still available anywhere and does anyone have a link to it? Thanks!
