So I think I figured out why my settings don't stay saved in PASM mode on my S1. I left a nearly exhausted battery in the camera for a month and when I charged it (it took 5 hours!) I found that all the settings, including my custom settings and even the date and time had all been reset. This must mean that the internal cell is depleted right? I have no plans to replace it and there shouldn't be a need to do so as long as I don't let the removable battery go flat correct? I simply redid my settings and set the correct date and time and turned the camera off and back on and everything is fine now. Of course if I go to review images it resets certain PASM settings again (but not Custom mode thankfully), so I need to avoid doing image review.
I'd let the camera battery go flat before but never let it stay like that for one month-- that must be what did it. This won't cause any long term problems with either the camera or the battery or shorten its life will it?
