Playing around with some lighting this morning. Advice on what I can do to improve these shots is very much appreciated!

Softbox was to my right about 5 feet from my face. Another strobe behind me, pointed at my back with a 40* grid.

you need to soften the light behind you. It looks like you have it pointed straight at your back .. causing halo around left arm area. You are also getting some discoloring of the shirt on the sides.

With the age come; wisdom and dementia.
So you forget how wise you are.
I'm so poor; I can't afford my own opinion.

Im kind of not liking the the cutting off of the hands in the 2nd one. Not that I can do any better...But I get confused myself on how to crop some images. Is there any rule people go by when cropping a portrait like his?

Good job and keep it up.

I too, am playing around with this lighting set up off camera... The
ony thing I'd change would be the hot spot behind the ear, and the a
little less halo effect on your left arm, elbow area.
Yeah - I noticed that as well and didn't care for it all that much. The ear with the hot spot sticks out more than the other ear. If I want to look straight ahead (which I did for this shot), I am wondering how I can reduce that? Any thoughts on that?

I did have it pointed straight at my back intentionally to get a slight halo effect. But lets say I wanted to remove that halo, where would you recommend to place the light behind me?

I think the discoloring of the shirt is because some of it was in direct line of the softbox, and other parts of it were "shaded" from the softbox light. Any recs on how to fix that problem?

I agree about the cutting off of the hands. Probably should have paid better attention to that rather than focus on the lighting as much as I did. I too would like to hear comments on where I should crop these pics (or how I could have framed them better to begin with).

I think the background light here's a little out of place firing up as you positioned it.
Also, you may want to frame your shot so there not too much room over your head.
Other than that everything looks fine.

You have a black background, black clothes, sunglasses, and a bald subject with a goatee. Do you feel soft smooth lighting is the right fit? ;)

Play with contrast. Try moving the softbox closer, or try not using the softbox. Harsh lighting is not a bad thing.

I agree with the others about the backlight. and I absolutely hate seeing your softbox on your glasses.

I would want to see you try both of your lights directly to your sides, head level, angled down a tad. Then begin rotating them around til you are happy with the results of the shadowing.
