nearly had a complete disaster recently due to the display not showing the correct exposure...

i was at a family all day event and forgot to change to AutoISO as the sun was going down

i thought 'Constant preview' was meant to show a preview of the current exposure and as the display looked good i carried on shooting

to my dismay though when i played back the photos later on they were all much darker than expected. luckily when i corrected in post they didn't look too bad but they could have been better with dual ISO

how do i get the screen to show exactly how my images are being exposed?

I don't have an S9, so I there might be some difference, but just to make sure you have constant preview set correctly, you might want to watch this video:

Now, if you have everything set up correctly, and there is STILL an issues, could it be that you have the monitor brightness or backlight set too high?

And if the above two options are ruled out, then maybe reset the camera?

Hope this helps.

hmmm, i checked that and other videos and looks like Constant Preview only works in manual mode?

is that right or am i missing something?

No, I use it in "Aperture mode" too.

"To enable constant preview of aperture effects on the Panasonic Lumix S5II, you need to activate the "Constant Preview" function and set it to display the aperture effect. This allows you to see the depth of field changes in real-time as you adjust the aperture, both in Aperture Priority (A) and Manual (M) modes".

Yeah, I use it in aperture priority, too.

Do you have the monitor/live view boost on? I think one of the modes kills live/constant preview totally.

thanks everyone

i still think the preview is, at best, inconsistent

not sure it works in non autoISO mode as it does in autoISO, not sure it works in Shutter priority mode, and even when it does work it previews the shutter effect which isn't very clear and slows things down in low light

on Olympus/OM cameras at least the preview is pretty much wysiwyg in any mode and just previews the exposure. simple and effective

in any case i won't use Shutter priority any more. will use Aperture priority instead and set minimum shutter speed with autoISO and rear dial exposure comp. seems to work ok so far. but that preview is still laggy and not great to use in low light

Yes, this is one of my biggest pet peeves with Panasonic cameras. I didn't have to deal with that laggy screen refresh on all my old Sony cameras, and don't see it on my Olympus E-M1 MK II, either.

But apparently on Panasonic bodies, it's not a bug, it's a feature ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
