removing a hard drive, Vista doesn't like it

For simplicity I always accept the default options when installing a program. I know the software maker knows more than I do when it comes to installing programs and if I choose a location other than the default, there's always the likelyhood that I may forget where that location is, not to mention the possibility that future program upgrades way not install correctly.
I cannot forget where I install programs if all my programs are installed on their own hard drive labeled "programs". :) Updates know where programs are installed too. I've operated this way for at least 5 years through 2 different computers.
You obviously think otherwise, but I see no reason to accept anything other than the "default" options when installing any software.
Yes I very much think differently.
We'll leave it at that then.

To err is Human. To really foul things up you need a computer.

The problem with installing programs to another drive is this. OS is on C: programs on E: when installing programs on E: they put their stuff in the REG on C: When you transfer programs from Drive E: to a New Drive, Windows is looking for those programs in the REG which is now not found because you changed drives.
Always easier to re-install the programs but SAVE your files and their folders.
Hope you followed that. :)

No, there were only a couple instances of the Z: drive in the registry. Windows thinks my programs are installed on the E: which they are. Even MS Office programs run fine off my E: which is a partition of a bigger drive that contains a restored ISO image of my failing drive. Failing drive renamed Z:
