Remote control

rather than try and build a radio remote why not just clip the excess cord out of the way, onto your tripod and also cover it in day-glo paint/tape so
you can see it and don't lose it in the dark.

you could also get a little battery operated fluorescent lamp to light up your equipment during set up-i use one and apart from attracting mosquitos it is a useful addition to any camera bag.

the whole idea of the remote is to reduce camera shake from the

pressing of the shutter release-the only reason one would need cable length is for tricky macro shots where the camera is in a difficult position. As these are usually taken in daylight then the cable should be less of a problem-the bright colouring should however help you to remember it when you pack up.

anyway thats my cheap and cheerful solution!
Hi all
I need to take pictures by remote control on a F828, however I do
not want to have a cable due to the pictures being at night and me
moving around with the cahnce of falling over.
I have done a search on this forum and the only one i can come up
with is no where near marketing yet. Anyone know any do it yourself
ways or tips? Please.

One reason, but not the only reason. Don't forget our many friends with birds, squirrels and other interesting but shy critters in their yards ;-)

Hi Barney,

have a look here: http://www.jg-ic.com/jgrc1.html

I don't know, if they do international shipping, but it sounds interesting.

Best regards
Daniel

What range would you be looking for?
IR/Radio?
What functionality?
I have an 828, so the functionality of any remote would be pretty limited. I'd just be looking for something that could release the shutter. The further the better as far as range, but I'd hope for at least 15 feet. I don't care if it's IR or RF.

Cheers

... but I'm afraid you'll have to forget about that! I just checked a couple of Web sites that have published reviews already and as far as I can see the W1 does not have a socket for the remote/flash connection as found on some other Sony models.

Now ... if they could just get it to work with the W1 ...

(... it would be a #%^& ( miracle, I know ... ) :-)

Sadly, I already knew that (hence my somewhat ironic comment).
I also checked with Sony UK, who confirmed.

It's a great failing of the W1 as far as I am concerned, and I suppose it is one of the compromises they had to make to keep the cost down.

It's rather odd though, since it has a tripod mount, and the kind of user who needs a tripod is also the kind of ser who may want a remote release from time to time. (I suppose tripod mounts are rather cheap to provide though!).

I notice in the latest version of the Sonystyle UK site, the camera is grouped in the "performance" cameras, along with the V1. hm ...

Thank you Shay for sharing that! Seems like tripods move around far too easily on their own.

Anybody else know of a workround?
Barney,

Just for your info: This is a strictly one-man enterprise, but a dead serious one nevertheless. Joern studies at the Hamburg Technical University and when I last had contact with him around the beginning of the year he was not far away from his final examinations for his degree.

Normally he is very approachable, has been posting here on the Sony Forum frequently, and he usually replies to E-Mail within a few days.

I'd suggest you wait another couple of days and then E-Mail him again.

Johannes

I agree however building a fiddly and delicate radio remote just seems a little too high tech for me-unless I had an extremely specialised need-such as putting my camera next to a wasps nest or similar.(could be a good macro project for someone out there!) It just looks like something else to break/lose in the field-I would stick with the seemingly robust Sony remote and take steps to avoid the perceived problems of tripping etc by careful cable management, as described earlier.

I emailed this group and recieved a reply to the effect that this product is not approved for use in the United States and Great Britain because of some radio frequency issue. I don't know the details, maybe it will make traffic signals go wacko! God only knows.
