Has anyone managed to come up with a system for using the ML-3 remote reliably from behind the camera...or off to one side etc?.....oh...I'm using a D70...

Have heard of all sorts of ideas that owners sweared by, like tinfoil etc taped to front to reflect, but Have never really had a problem myself just holding it at arms length to the side, so never bothered trying :)

Ditto. I saw someone with a cotton ball stuck on it for a reflector, but mine fires reliably at a 90 degree angle to the left of the camera.

DIY cable for D40 etc.

Somewhere in this forum, there is a post where the guy inserted a strip between the battery and the contacts in the remote. A thin cable with a switch on the end is soldered to the strip.

The strip is anything with two conductive surfaces with an insulator between them and is very thin. There are many possibilities for this but I am thinking of using the soldering tape used for stained glass. This is copper on both sides of a tape and comes in various widths.

Forgot to add, the remote is attached to the camera pointing at the "eye" e.g. with a Velcro dot.

Look at the Nikon MC-DC1 - it is a 3' "cable release" that attaches directly to the camera body and operates like a conventional cable release we used to use on film cameras. It sells for about $25 at B&H and knockoffs are available on Ebay for half that.

Works with D40, D80 and D70s (not 70)

This cable will not work with the D40 as the camera does not have the connector.

The initial review was wrong about this - I tried it in a shop.

Don't know about the D70.

I have used two methods. One is a mirror but the one that I like best is white gaff tape flag on the lens. Its quick easy and removable. I was able to shoot from about 20' up and 30' in back.

Gaff Tape is like duct tape but a matte fabric, comes in lots of colors, and has less sticky residue. Expect to pay $10-$15 per 2"x60 yrd. roll. Look for it at theatrical supply stores. I'd avoid camera stores since I've seen them sell it for $20/roll.

For situations with more repeated or longer use I'd like to try and use one of the IR repeaters I've seen for TV remotes. These may require AC power but may work for some applications.
