RAW+JPEG button, permanent switch possible?

So far I have been able to activate the RAW+JPEG mode only for a single photo by pressing the RAW+JPEG button. I use normally RAW only.

Is it possible to make the selection stay active for several photos / until I switch camera power off / etc ?

If not, I can't see musch use for this functionality. Who wants to shoot only one photo in other mode? At minimum it should be selectable if it is single only or "for now".

If you know you're going to be shooting a certain way (e.g. RAW+JPEG) for a bunch of shots, why not just set the camera that way? It takes less than 5 seconds to do that. It's amazing what people will complain about. Canon introduces this nifty new button, and you complain that it doesn't do exactly what you want it to do.

Use your camera menu to get to setup - storage options or whatever the title is on your camera. This will be your default I imagine.

You'll have to check your camera manual. If choosing any .jpg individual or combined with raw, choose the quality (fine, large, etc.) which determines the .jpg size. If desired just set your default to RAW.

I just store RAW on the CF card I use. RAW appears to be somewhat compressed but it is a non-lossy format. On older RAW folders I transfer those to DVD archives when I need disk space. That way I can always go back and redo the original transferred image from the camera if desired.

If you want a fast change to RAW & JPEG, just set your SET button in C.FnIV 1 to Image Quality. You'll enjoy that tweak. Even though it's 2 button's instead of one, the SET> Quick Control Dial to right can be done pretty fast with your thumb if you get used to it.

okay, it's actually 3, Set, QC button right, Set. But still pretty fast...

I agree; I find that it's very useful. I tend to shoot raw + JPEG but need to switch quickly to all-JPEG when I see action that needs a burst. An example would be following a moving aircraft/person/dragon that suddenly begins complex motion that calls for long, fast burst.

Which Canons have this capability?

If you know what you're shooting, and you know you need some JPEG-only and some RAW + JPEG, you could set two of your custom modes to two identical settings, except for recording quality. Just flip between them.

Of course, this isn't as convenient as having a button toggle settings, but it's an option to consider when prepping for a shoot.

I still don't see what this has to do with the OP's question. OP asked whether it was possible for the RAW+JPEG button on the 7D to switch for more than one shot. You are telling him how to set a default. That's not what he asked. Do you have a camera with the button he's talking about? It's a new feature.

Sorry for the misinterpretation. I have a 50D and don't care about video but I do shoot bursts for exposure comp or capturing action stills.

I get enough compression in the CR2 RAW format for my purposes.

Thanks for your replies. Yes, I use 7D. So, it is not possible to set the RAW+JPEG button to switch the RAW/JPEG storage mode for more than one photo at a time.
