I've been using Linux Open Source tethering software for fun for years. Tethering is sort of a hobby within a hobby for me. I've had great success with programs such as Entangle and Darktable.

However, this has all been done on a proper laptop with Ubuntu.

I decided to go all in and see if a Pi 5 could handle the load. I especially was concerned that I was reading from multiple sources that you had to compile Entangle from code to get it to work. That's not a problem for me but I like the easy way out first usually.

So I took a Pi 5 (8GB) that boots from a 4TB NVME drive and installed Entangle. I found no issues except that my 2006 era Canon A640 was a bit beyond quirky. All other cameras I use that can tether worked fine.

And while I installed GIMP on the Pi, my workflow is almost always done in Mac so I installed Samba to quickly share files on the network.

I'm kind of sort of stunned at how well this worked and how easy it was. Picture this.

Pi 5 zip tied to your tripod. You then VNC into the Pi and do all your controls from your laptop or desktop. Post process on same said laptop or desktop.

Details are here: Hope this is of interest to some here.

I bought a Raspberry Pi 4 for my Grandson a couple of years ago. Remarkable capability, considering the small size.

I'm not interested in tethering, but left a comment on your Guide to PI 5.
