R8 Buffer Behaviour with UHS-I card

Oh, he gave me a good deal, I am sure. :-)

Of course. My comment was more to let anyone reading this know what they should base their spending decision on

A V60 card is all that is needed for the R8, according to the Canon rep at a recent WEX store open day (UK). I use V60 cards in my R5 and R7, and I shoot bursts using CRAW, but no video. To maximise buffer capacity and write speed, turn off image corrections if you can, as they all slow down the processing.

I was using a uhs1, v30 card in my R8. With this card I could shoot ES at 20 frames per second, craw + fine Jpeg for about 10 seconds. It would take approx 30-35 seconds to totally clear. With the uhs II, v60 card getting about the same num of pics but the buffer is totally cleared in about 20 seconds.

I‘m experiencing the same like the original poster.

But the camera even slows down on 3 or 4 shots in a burst. The Q menu and the Playback button are unavailable for several seconds !!!

Its not just the super fast electronic shutter burst mode!

I have the RP and had also the EOS R which were fine with the same type of card.

I only experienced such behaviour on my old EOS M5 which I replaced quickly with the the M50 back than.

But I’m very upset that the new generation R8 shows such slowdown.

:(

And this whole you should buy a UHS-2 card advises are counterproductive.

This is a completely different issue older cameras didn’t show with the same UHS-1 card.

…. Resetting the camera solved the issue for me too…

Who knows what was the problem…

So I’m kinda, obsessed might be the word, about these sort or details.

.

Few tips about SD cards…

Fast read speed doesn’t matter. Fast write speed? That’s key.

.

Fluffy terms like V30 are deceptive. It means, literally, 30mb/sec write. That’s, well, good for the landfill for buffer clearing. V90? Meh, you’re getting there, but V90 still isn’t UHS-II limited. In fact the top tier Sandisk UHS-1 does 95mb read, 90mb write. I have a 256GB flavor in my R8 right now as I’ve been using my 128GB Sony Tough UHS-II in my R3, and the 64GB flavor as a quasi usb drive that’s silly fast. That Sandisk Extreme PRO UHS-I is cheap btw, the 90mb write flavor, especially for how big they go. Highly recommended for bang for buck.

.

But if you want real buffer? I test my own cards, and the Sony Tough UHS-II 64GB and 128GB take the cake.

I have a prograde UHS-II, 512 flavor, it’s faster still, but really expensive, and I’ve lost data to it. That’s a no no. The Sony and Sandisk have never flaked on me. Beware.

.

Cards out of the way. Consider c-raw. Much lighter on both storage needs and larger buffer, faster clearing. Indistinguishable from RAW in my experience.

I think just a cheap V90 Sandisk extreme pro and c-raw will treat you well. But sure, a real Sony tough, will, better.

I’ll test this for fun, but I expect to find my conclusions previously will hold. I may pit my Sony against my Prograde, for fun. Eshutter, doesn’t cost me anything after all.
