Hi all, apologies but I am coming from an EOS R where metering, autofocus and AE lock was a lot easier and less complicated, so I am struggling in trying to understand how different settingfs work together.

IMPORTAN: I am using SINGLE BACK FOCUS (like on the former R), where shutter button starts/stops metering and AE-ON starts/stops autofocus in SERVO (I barely use ONE SHOT).

Let's start from metering modes:

The Notes are a little unclear to me:
  1. I undesrtand that half pressing shutter button will lock the exposure ONLY for EVALUATIVE and ONLY for ONE SHOT: what if I want to lock exposure in SERVO?
  2. I undesrtand that if I want the same behaviour for SPOT/etc. I need to enable them into AE lock meter mode after focus, correct? Does it make sense to do this?
    772798ad32e24f95b0bf1e60f8cb1b90.jpg.png
  3. Does the same behaviour apply to ASTERISK button that I have set to AE-LOCK? If yes (as I presume), probably the answer to question 1 is: if I am in SERVO I can take and lock the exposure using the ASTESIK button. Correct?
How all the above works in combination with how Canon describes the effect of AE lock, beats me:

I understand that, regardless if I lock exposure once subject is in focus only for EVALUATIVE or also for SPOT/etc, the (main) metering
  1. at the (auto)selected focus point in EVALUATIVE
  2. at the center in SPOT/etc.
So, I can decide for which metering modes lock the exporure after focus, but regardless of this choice, the (main) metering is taken at focus point for EVALUATIVE and at center for SPOT/etc, and this applies to both half pressing shiutter button and to asterisk button --> Correct?

This should match with what I have been reading: also on the R5 Mk2 you cannot link the metering to the focus point... Or better: you cannot link the metering to the focus point in SPOT/etc. but you can in EVALUATIVE if you enable AE for priority subjects during AF:

Now, if the above is on, row 1 for EVALUATIVE in ythe following still makes sense:

07898943880a4e4a93f51e12ae143db3.jpg.png

But if it is off, it doesn't any longer: if AE for priority subjects during AF is OFF, which means that metering is based on the entire screen, how can be valid the statement "in EVALUATIVE the AE lock is based on an exposure centered on the selectd focus point"?

I am lost...

I suggest you leave the camera in Evaluative, set Detect Priority AE while AF to "on" and go photograph stuff. It works great. Dial in some exposure compensation if necessary.

To be honest, since I moved from reflex to mirrorless, in the last 5 years I have been using lock exp less and less and as a matter of fact my lenses' ring is set to exp compensation to quickly change exposure at need :-)
