I hope I'm just missing this but i have two questions as it relates to the latest version of LR Desktop.

1.) can you batch rename a bunch of files in a folder? typically in LR classic, you just select the files in the Library module and press F2 and can rename them, but I haven't seen how to do this in LR Desktop.

2.) When using local storage, can you create albums to sort out photos and make custom "collections" of photos (that may reside in different folders)? I know in Bridge, they have collections, so I'm hoping something similar is available.

(I'm kind of thinking of moving away from Lr classic and just using LR Desktop as it does skip the importing workflow, but I'd miss the collections/collection sets and the ability to batch rename files. I know Bridge can do these tasks, but it doesn't have the processing interface built in like LR does, you have to launch ACR).

I don't think you can do either of these things, in my experience and according to the Lightroom Queen. This site has a comparison table for the various forms of LR. You need to scroll down a bit o find it.

OK thanks, I was afraid of that. I know you can create albums ("collections") for Cloud files but strange they don't let you do this for local storage (even Bridge allows it although all a collection is in Bridge is a just a file list so I don't see how this could be that hard for them to implement.

This comes up from time to time; why can't Adobe do this simple thing?

It's not that they can't do it, its not that it would be hard at all. However, this apparently is not on Adobe's list of priorities, Lightroom (Cloud version) was never designed to be and was never thought of as a way to organize your files on your local disk; this doesn't fit in with their view of the desired usage of this product. (Having said that, it may be the next release provides this functionality, I don't know, but I'd be surprised if it did)

And anyway, you can do this in LrC and Bridge. It's another way of Adobe saying: Choose the right tool for the job you want.
