I'm wondering how the service is when buying a camera like a D7000 from Amazon, not their 3rd party advertisers, but Amazon itself. They offer free shipping and competitive price, I'm just afraid that whatever could go wrong, there is no phone support or camera department, just a bunch of people filling orders, etc.

Is this something I should avoid?

I had no problem getting a return authorization for the D7000 within the 30 day return period. They even refunded my return shipping charges.

Don't worry. If something goes wrong with the camera when you get it and you are still within the return period, just return it. If you're beyond the return period, then send it to Nikon (1 year warranty). I just bought my D3100 a few weeks ago from Amazon, and couldn't be happier. Besides, your brick and mortar will likely be a little more expensive. You could always check out Adorama or B&H - lots of photographers seem to buy from those online outfits.

Amazon is great if you ever need to return anything. Free return shipping, no real hassles in the return process. I returned a 50-200 VR 2 days after I got it just because I didn't like the AF speed. No questions asked.

My sister-in-law ordered a D90 w/kit lens from Amazon, and when it arrived the mount on the lens was broken. Amazon shipped a new kit immediately when she called on Friday night, the new kit arrived on Monday and she shipped the old one back with the prepaid label that they supplied.

I haven't had any problems with returns with Amazon.

Here's a not-too-easy-to-find phone number for Amazon: 800-201-7575
