Production D800E Photograhic Dynamic Range and Read Noise

This speculation doesn't make sense. They did not remove the AA filter.
I misspoke, the AA is not removed but ... look carefully at the diagram:

http://www.nikonusa.com/en_US/IMG/Images/Learn-And-Explore/2012/Camera-Technology/D-SLR-Series/Moire-D800-D800E/Media/OLPF_schematic.pdf

A wave plate has been replaced with optical glass.

The wave plate absorbs (slightly) more light than the optical glass so the D800E gets a little more light than the D800.

Ahhh... I hadn't realized they needed a quarter wave plate in there. I was going off of DPReview's simplified diagram:

It's very possible (likely, even) the wave plate attenuates a little more light... though I'd still like to see what the standard deviation is over several samples of the same model.
