Hi

I'm new to this forum, so my apologies if this has been covered. Searching didn't uncover an answer.

Does anyone have experience processing X-T5 RAF files on Capture One? Is is very much slower than processing smaller files, for instance from the X-T4?

I currently convert 24MPx (Pentax) files to DNG for processing. Just wondering whether it will become notably slower if I switch to Fujifilm, either because of the increased MPix or the fact it's a different RAW format?

I have an i5 Intel Mac. I use FastRawViewer to preview files so don't need to scroll through huge numbers in Capture One. I just use Capture One to edit the selects.

Thanks in advance

Paul

The software is, the question is I suppose, is the hardware?

I use Capture One, latest version to process GFX100SII files and the software is certainly fast enough, as is the culling process. However, I am using a new M4 Mac with the raw files sitting on external thunderbolt SSD drives.

Capture one provide a trial license and there's plenty of raw files on-line to try, give it a try and see how it goes?

Thanks both of you.
I don't need to get a trial version of C1 as I already have it. But C1 is pushing us to subscription so I've been thinking of swapping to Photomator. Changing camera might be the moment…

I did download a few sample X-T5 RAF files and that was what prompted the question. They took a while to render on my old Mac. I too keep have the files on an external SSD via Thunderbolt

Best

Larger files will always be slower than smaller files. On fast hardware you may not see a slow down but on slow hardware you can. The recent versions of capture one make good use of cpu+gpu and is super fast to preview and process with compared to say photolab.

Capture one is about as fast a raw processor as you can get so if you have problems with that then you will encounter problem with everything. My experience is on windows but mac stuff is comparable.

FWIW considering dumping capture one due to perpetual price and push for subscription as well but the speed of the app isnt the issue its larger xtrans raws on slower hardware. Unfortunately these days you need to consider your hardware and workflow as well as camera.

I use capture 1 on X-T5 compressed raw. Its speed is quite good. No appreciable delays. The only thingI find taking some time is stitching panos into .dng files. I haven't timed the process but stitching more than 2-3 files can mean maybe a minute (+ or - guessing here). I don't do that often though. For normal processing it is very speedy. Crops and slider changes are instantaneous. And there are some for me very useful presets that are much quicker than using individual sliders.

The computer you are using is an important element. I'm using a 2022 Apple M1 Max Studio with 32 GB of memory. Thom Hogan's web site has a few posts on recommended Apple machines where he stresses that memory is more important for processing speed than processor. That said, the Mac Studio is noticeably quicker at loading new files into the catalog than my 13 inch m4 macbook air that has 24 GB of memory. But even on that machine post processing is maybe a beat slower than the mac studio.

2020 M1 Mac Mini, 16GB RAM: have not noticed significant speed difference in C1 when I switched from X-T3 to X-T5.

Thanks. That's helpful. I just downloaded a few from the DPReview sample gallery and ran them in my setup. They felt slower than 24MP Pentax K3 iii DNGs, but not vastly so.

I have an older Intel version of iMac and also a 2024 M3 iMac

You can not use the newest version of Capture One with Intel processor - the new version is great ...

I have processed X-H1 and also Canon R5 files with both machines . Speed has not been an issue - of course i'm not a professional who need fast batch processing of huge amounts.

Time to update the old iMac ?

Thanks, useful info.

I don't think I can afford to update Mac and camera at once…

Neither have I upgraded to the latest Capture 1, again for cost reasons.

Just trying to get the best results while spending the least cash and throwing the least electronics into the dumpster
