I am having a problem changing the screen brightness on my R5. I can navigate to the setting and change the brightness, say from 3 to 5, and then "save" it, and returning to the screen, the brightness has changed, but returns to level 3 after my next shot. I can not lock the setting to 5. (I also have an R6, and that doesn't have the same problem i.e I can lock the brightness setting.)

Yep, that sorted it. I had not updated the setting in my C1 settings. Thanks!

+1

You can also program a button to toggle "Maximum Brightness."

I have found the problem, but not the solution, to locking in the screen brightness. When I use one of the custom settings, C1 for instance, it doesn't appear possible to lock the brightness level. All the other modes, P, Tv, Av, etc, the camera retains the screen brightness number set in the menu. Is there a way to set and lock the screen brightness in the custom settings?

Just enable audio update as it was suggested in the post above (then disable it again if you want the brightness level locked).

Great, the "Auto update" did the trick! Thanks everyone.

If you don't want the auto update, set the camera to C1 > change brightness to desired level > go back into the menu and resave the C1 settings. If you don't go back into the menu and resave the custom settings, the "new" setting will only stay "set" until the camera is turned off. When you turn it back on it will revert to the last set of custom settings which you saved (which in your case will not have saved the new brightness setting).

p.s. I don't like the auto settings for custom functions because sometimes I don't want changes I make in the field to stick. For example, I have C1 set for bird in flight photography with a "starting" setting of 1/3200 sec. If during a shoot, I decide to photograph a sitting bird at 1/250, and then turn the camera off, it will remember the 1/250 setting. The next time I need to quickly access my BIF shooting settings, I more than likely will want 1/3200, but if the custom settings are set to "auto' the shutter speed I will get will be 1/250.

Thanks "CameraCarl", you have resolved my problem.
