Hi,

I sometimes have problems with DNG-files from my Leica Q in Lightroom. I typically get the message "The file appears to be unsupported or damaged." I tried opening one in Capture One but it won't show there either.

The images/files have been imported with Photo Mechanic, which I use for all imports. I tag them with PM. Most files have no problems, but sometimes files from my Leica Q gets corrupted. I can still see them in PM and (the embedded preview) in Lightroom, but can not edit. Tried opening one in Capture One as well, but it wouldn't. I've tried different brands of SD cards (SanDisk and Lexar). but doesn't really make any difference. It never happens to my M10 (or GR III which also has DNG-files).

A while since it happened, but today I lost 15 out of 30 as corrupted.

Any idea what it could be?

Have you tried a different memory card? I had a similar problem with a different non-Leica camera. I changed cards and had no further issues. After recovering what photos I could I tossed the corrupted card.

Yes, I have and it doesn't seem to be related to the memory card. It doesn't happen every time and not with other cameras (I have Nikon and Fujifilm as well). Don't beliece it has every happened to my M10 files despite using the same kind of memory cards.

Apologies from an interloper. I've a vague recollection from my Nikon days (IIRC) of one of the programs used to injest files causing problems. Apologies if I've misunderstood but if you put the SD card in a card reader and import by a simple copy and paste using nothing but the OS what happens? If they are still unreadable then I suppose the camera is recording duff files.

Many times it is a problem in transport from SD to PC

The card reader or cable needs to be checked or replaced.

I'm using the card slot on my MacBook Pro, but I will try a different card reader next time, and see if it helps. On the other hand, I had the same problem with my MacBook Air which did use a card reader.

It's really annoying. After I transfered the photos to my MacBook, I tagged them and they seemed all right in PM. Later, when they were imported to Lightroom, it didn't read the DNG files. Unfortunately I had formatted the memory card by then.

How and in what device do you format your card?

I have experienced the same issue, appears to be a Photomechanic/Leica DNG comaptability issue. Flagged this up with Camerabits last year who mentioned I was not the first with the issue.

Their problem was the difficulty in trying to replicate the issue to put in front of the development team without a camera. Suspect that the numbers of Photomechanic users with the problem is very small and and understandably not a high priority trying to resolve something which is not of their making.

The only safe solution has been to drag the files from the SD card onto the computer and back up to another storage option prior to opening the files. Bit of a nuisance when trying to cull and add information to the images.

Which is exactly what I suggested and the same as my old Nikon issue.

Thanks for the info! Could be that for DNG files PM doesn't add a XMP file, like it does for NEF or RAF.

Still, curious why it never happened to my M10 or my Ricoh GR III, which also use DNG files.

Maybe I should check with PM support also. At least I have a few corrupted files that they can check.

How do you format your cards and do you use them in any other camera,?
I always format the cards in the camera after import, and rarely use them in any other camera.
