I'm using the latest subscription version of Photoshop. Clone stamp source point stopped showing graduated colored area in the circle that represents the amount of hardness. Now there is only a blank circle representing the source point area. Same problem with brush tool and spot healing tool. Any help would be appreciated.

I have an older version of PS ... but resetting the tool usually fixes weird behavior.

yes I did, thanks..

I occasionally have weird things happen with various tools in the new Photoshop.

My fix is to hit Shift + Spacebar and the problem goes away. Maybe it will help. Who knows.

I tried resetting the clone stamp tool but it didn't bring back the color in the circle, thank you for your reply..

thanks for tip, I tried it but it didn't fix my problem.

Can you take a screen shot of your screen when using the Clone Stamp tool and show me exactly what you are experiencing? Post the screen shot here please.

I just tried my Clone Stamp tool, and all is working just fine with mine. So, I would like to see your settings in the tool menu bar, and see what it is you are describing.

I'm not quite sure what you're asking here.

Do you mean the circle that shows when you alt/right click to adjust the size and hardness/softness?
Now there is only a blank circle representing the source point area.
If, by this, you're referring to the circle that shows when you use alt/left click to select an area to be cloned to somewhere else, that's initially clear until I select the area to be cloned, after which it's full of the last selection that I made.
Same problem with brush tool and spot healing tool. Any help would be appreciated.

screen shot from my desktop and from my laptop, (Laptop display red in source point) which indicates hardness which you can adjust while holding down on right mouse button. When I do that on my desktop there is know red.. just a blank circle.

This has been an issue in some previous versions of PS - see discussion here:

https://community.adobe.com/t5/phot...sh-red-overlay-is-missing/td-p/9506412/page/3

if it is the same issue then I would expect you to have the same issue with the other tools that work with brushes also - not just the clone stamp.

There isn't really an obvious solution from this thread, except that it may be related to graphics processor support. Maybe check your graphics processor settings in the performance preferences, maybe change something, restart and see if it solves the problem.

Hi Bildeb

The good news is that you are able to change the brush/stamp size with the HUD and the only thing missing is that you don't have the visual red preview which is really needed to get a feel for the hardness with the vertical movement when using the HUD

It turns out that it the graphics processor is

- turned off

- not compatible with Photoshop

- Or preferences is corrupted

Then you can experience the missing color preview. Turning off the graphics processor on my Mac has the same exact effect that you are experiencing.

So here is some steps to take

1) Use the Help > GPU Compatibility command to verify both that the graphics processor is turned on and if it has all the checkboxes checked showing full compatibility. If the processor indicates it is off or not all the checkboxes are showing full compatibility, you have probably found the problem.

2) You can try to reset preferences or delete the preferences file (it will automatically regenerate) and make sure the graphics processor is turn on under Preferences > Performance when you restart your computer.

Everything I see points to a graphics card issue for the root cause of your problem.

Hope this helps some.

I need you to OPEN an image, and then select the Clone Tool. Then take a screenshot and post it, please. Thanks.

OK, now that I know the issue, are you saying that you would like the RED SOURCE point on your Laptop also? Is that what you are concerned with? Are you looking to be able to adjust the hardness on your laptop from a source point? Is that what you are trying to do? If so, just SELECT a source point on your laptop and then move your cursor to a different location on the photo to show the source point inside the circle. You will then see the hardness levels the same way you do on your desktop.

I only have a laptop that I work from, and I do not get the RED source point, I only get a source point on my laptop when I click on one. At that point, I can then see the hardness levels and adjust them according. But the source point is only established on my laptop when I select one in the image.

I checked my NVidia video driver.. it is up to date.. under performance I tried all the graphic processor options.. I tried resetting preferences.. the only thing I haven't done is delete the preferences file.. I've never done that.. afraid something will go wrong if I do that and is the red highlighted file the one to delete?

All you need do is to slightly change the name of your preference file. It will then not be recognized when you start PS & a new preference file will be created I believe. If you want to revert to your original file just change the name back to the original. This will of course show if your issue is a damaged preference file.

Alternatively, save a copy of your preference file somewhere else on your machine & delete the one in the PS folder. Then put the saved file back when, & if, you want to.

Hope you solve your problem.

Here is a link to detailed GPU troubleshooting that also includes the step in my prior post.

Photoshop GPU Troubleshooting

Note that they have specific instructions for NVIDIA GPU cards in that you should use the Studio drivers instead of the Gaming drivers

I suggest going down the whole list in debugging your issue

Hope this helps

The easy way . . .

A new default set of preferences will be created, by Adobe, the next time you open Photoshop.
