Problem with my new 780

Hi all,

Just got my Epson Photo 780 for Christmas and I'm getting a thin vertical white line through all my prints on thick paper. This is obviously not a dirty head since the line is vertical...it's caused by this little geared wheel a couple of inches from the right margin that I assume is designed to keep the paper from curling up in the printer. It's actually cutting into the paper and I can feel and see an indent when printing on "HP Photo Postcard Paper" and "Epson Heavyweight Matte". This doesn't happen on regular "photocopy" type paper so I'm assuming that this little wheel is putting too much pressure on the more stiff papers as it prints. Has anyone seen or heard of this and have a solution, or is this a defective unit?

Thanks in advance,

Michael

P.S. I'm very happy with the output quality so far, not counting this rather nasty problem.

Mickey,

There is a "thick/thin" lever on the right side (looking at it) of the printer. Perhaps, if you put it on thick it will help.

Dlight,
Can you tell me exactly the location of this lever?

Sounds like the ol' Pizza Wheel problem. Search for 'pizza' in this forum. (I can't do it now as the system is updating the index).

Thanks for your replies...I've taken a look through the forum for this "pizza wheel" problem but haven't been able to find a solution. Perhaps my search skills need to be refined. Some people note that they have little dots in their prints from this wheel, but I'm getting some serious "carvage" of the paper. I tried setting the lever to "thick" and strangely enough it got worse - it actually took chunks of the printed ink off along with the thin line! I'm still waiting to hear back from Epson, but from what I've seen, it seems my printer's defective. Perhaps it's this HP photo paper too...I'm going to try another print on some Epson Heavyweight with the lever set to thick tomorrow .

If anyone could point me to a particular post that has solutions other than adjusting the thickness lever, I'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks,

Michael

I feel I should update on my situation now...It turns out the unit I got WAS defective...After closer examination, I found that one of the INNER pizza wheels was actually stuck (wouldn't rotate) so was carving a line in the prints. It was the one that lined up with the outer plastic wheel. I've since returned it for another 780 and it's working beautifully, no white lines or even indents on Epson Matte, Glossy, or other papers (just printed an 8x10 on Kodak paper and it came out superb).

Now I just gotta figure out which of the 1001 colour settings I like best with my setup!
