I got back into photography in 2012 with an Olympus OMD E-M5 and a kit lens. I wasn't blown away by the image quality and I didn't really shoot much. In 2016 I started taking a bit more photos and I felt I wanted a bit more range. I invested in the 40-150mm f2.8 PRO and it invigorated my love for photography, image quality took a big jump over the kit zoom.

With the 40-150 I started to get into bird photography and in March of 2017 I upgraded to the Olympus E-M1 mkII and a few weeks later added the 300mm f4 PRO.

I love the camera, best ergonomics of any camera I've ever held, not close. It's awesome for birds in flight.

The past 6 months I've gotten more and more into landscapes. This is where I feel maybe the camera is not the best. I have the 12-40mm f2.8 PRO which is a superb lens. Results are pretty decent but I think they could be much more with a camera that lends itself more to landscape photography.

I'm not switching systems but thinking about adding a second system to complement my current. With FF I would get better DR and better color transitions, low light performance (not my main priority), better resolution and better details.

Olympus is supposedly announcing something big at the beginning of 2019 so I will wait until we know what that is.

I don't like Sony, I feel they are badly designed cameras but with great image quality. Bad ergonomics, build quality and effectivly no weather sealing. However if I want to stay mirrorless I think this is my only option. Maybe a used A7RII would make sense if I was to go this path?

I have not shot DSLR since my film days, that is roughly 18 years. My thought here is that there should be a lot of equipment on the used market now that everyone is talking mirrorless. Maybe there is a bargain to be had? Canon 5DSR, Nikon D810, those are two cameras that come to mind but to be honest I'm not that knowledgeable in this area so any advice appreciated. Maybe there are not so many options with 30+ MP? I do like to print big and I'm not terribly unhappy with the quality given by my Olympus but I know it could be improved upon.

Since this would be a landscape camera I would not be so worried about frame rates or CAF or tracking.

For this to make sense it has to kind blow the Olympus E-M1 mkII away and I think there aren't too many cameras that does that. Obviously the D850, 5D IV and A7RIII would but those are also mighty exepensive.

I figure the Nikon or Canon route is probably better since the lenses would be alot cheaper? Not that I know which lenses to get but still. I would need a standard 24-70 and then something like a 16-32 or simular.

What are your thoughts about my reasoning? What would be the best bang for the buck? I do prefer Canon as a brand over both Nikon and Sony.

This does require a tripod, and is only suitable for stationary scenes, but have you tried the pixel-shift functionality on your Olympus E-M1 mkII camera? For suitable scenes you would get a significant quality boost, perhaps making your desire for full-frame superfluous.

I have tried it, sometimes with great results but I would say it's extremely situational and requires quite a bit of post processing skill to make the most of it.

Usually I try to take a few high res shots as well as my regular shots. I never just take the high res shots as it's very unreliable. The slightest movement in the scene or wind can ruin the shot so better always take the regular shots to be sure.

another m4/3 camera? you'll want a ff camera for the best landscape results.
I don't like Sony, I feel they are badly designed cameras but with great image quality. Bad ergonomics, build quality and effectivly no weather sealing.
that is total nonsense, the latest bodies in particular are loaded with weather seals.

see the photo below.

that would be a good idea.

dslrs are problematic for landscapes because the ovf fails miserably for manual focusing, and using the rear lcd is weak sauce as well.

you want an evf with an oled panel in it.

any ff sony will be much better at base iso, and up to two stops better with the later model cameras.

that oly camera is a major fail at lower isos, and the resolution is weak at all settings.

Obviously the D850, 5D IV and A7RIII would but those are also mighty exepensive.

I figure the Nikon or Canon route is probably better since the lenses would be alot cheaper?
mostly old lens designs, that are not comparable to modern glass, but if you insist you can use any of those lenses on sony milc, just like you can on oly bodies, just get an adapter.
Not that I know which lenses to get but still. I would need a standard 24-70 and then something like a 16-32 or simular.
for the best results, primes are the way to go, with a few exceptions.

Then anything we say is going to be kind of irrelevant. The landscape could change in six months. Although Olympus would have to do something truly amazing to change the heirarchy
I don't like Sony,
Then don't buy one
I feel they are badly designed cameras but with great image quality. Bad ergonomics, build quality and effectivly no weather sealing.
It depends on the model but you cannot say "effectively no weather sealing" that is just wrong. They definitely don't have the best weather sealing
However if I want to stay mirrorless I think this is my only option.
For now. Nikon is supposed to announce theirs any day. Canon probably by the time you make a decision

or Mabe a used A7RII would make sense if I was to go this path?

What.........you don't like Sony. Don't buy one. That said for the 1500ish you can buy one for used/grey it is darn hard to beat as a landscape camera
I have not shot DSLR since my film days, that is roughly 18 years. My thought here is that there should be a lot of equipment on the used market now that everyone is talking mirrorless. D810 yes. 5dsr it depends. Pentax k1, Sony a99ii A7r.and a7rii. Those are hi res models

6d, 5diii, a7, a7ii, D800, D750 if you don't want a hi res model.
Maybe there are not so many options with 30+ MP?
No. Not that many. These cameras are "relatively" new .
I do like to print big and I'm not terribly unhappy with the quality given by my Olympus but I know it could be improved upon.
Your call.

Every model mentioned bests the em1ii. Some more than others .
and I think there aren't too many cameras that does that.
Huh.......yeah. even older ff models bests the em1ii
Obviously the D850, 5D IV and A7RIII would but those are also mighty exepensive.
You don't have to go that hi end.
I figure the Nikon or Canon route is probably better since the lenses would be alot cheaper?
Ish. Generally yes but weigh out your options. On the whole Sony is about 30% more than than Canon and 15% than Nikon. You just need to pick your lenses and compare.
Not that I know which lenses to get but still. I would need a standard 24-70 and then something like a 16-32 or simular.
If your looking at 2.8s the Canon is cheapest on lenses. Nikon not a lot less than Sony .
What are your thoughts about my reasoning?
Just wait. You don't like Sony and no one will make you buy one.

Whatatat would be the best bang for the buck?

IMO A7rii .

I do prefer Canon as a brand over both Nikon and Sony.

Nikon D810 has probably the best bang for the buck in DSLR sensors.

Canon you need to buy the 5div or 5dsr for Canons best sensors. Priced a lot higher. Luckily they may have the cheapest lenses for you

I understand that all the new FF cameras will best the E-M1 mkII, some more than others. But there aren't that many that will blow it out of the water. And for me to add a FF it only makes sense to add one that does that or I might just as well stick to the E-M1 only.

I don't like Sony but it's hard to ignore the price of a used Sony A7RII. Hopefully Canon will announce their ML offerings soon also, that may bring down their prices of used DSLRs some more. If I could pick a camera it would probably be the 5D mkIV but it's a bit more expensive than what I want to spend, even used.

Base ISO

High ISO*

and before someone states that landscapes are always at base ISO.......no . Some people also pull their shadows. Obviously you can blend but maybe you do less shots with a full frame etc.....
I don't like Sony but it's hard to ignore the price of a used Sony A7RII.
If you don't like something then you don't like something. Move on. One of the WORST things you could do is to purchase a camera you have a grudge against. You will never get used to it
Hopefully Canon will announce their ML offerings soon also, that may bring down their prices of used DSLRs some more.
MEh.......cannot predict the future. IF they follow typical Canon thinking their mirrorless camera will be a very stripped version to avoid encroaching on the 5div.They have the market share to basically release anything they want and it will sell. We will see the long term when it gets here
If I could pick a camera it would probably be the 5D mkIV but it's a bit more expensive than what I want to spend, even used.
The 5div is a nice camera. Your prejudice against Sony is unfortunate. Other than the weathersealing they have a competitive model that retails at 2k. Even besting it in certain areas.

yes .... Canon will be cheaper ... and possibly better for birds ... FF .. maybe

Thanks. I needed a laugh. Please tell me how capable and cheap the 6dii was. I cannot wait to see what they have up their sleeve

If you feel you'll do better photography with a FF, go for it. The feeling of owning a FF for what you shoot feels good.

stop pretending to have a valid opinion about something that you know nothing about.

I got sony ff milc back in 2013, I've beat on it hard, I know how well the weather sealing works.
