And I believe you when you say that your 300D flash exposure works as expected. There are a significant number of 300D owners who report no flash underexposure problems and I believe them, too. I only wish I could say the same thing about mine.

Like I've posted before, I'm not angry about the problem and I solved it by buying a 550ex and using +2/3 FEC.

I think I understand how to use FEL but it just wasn't practical for me since the majority of my flash photos are candid photos of my children, who are in almost constant motion. I'm not the most physically coordinated person in the world so I was never (or only rarely) quick enough to both engage FEL and get the shot. By the time I engaged FEL the moment had usually passed. And I pretty much had to use FEL in order to get a properly exposed flash photo.

I still like the 300D, would buy it again even if I knew about this problem at the outset and wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to friends.
Ok,
maybe I was too harsh, but please understand me. My camera works
exactly as I expect. It does exactly what I want from it. I can
make under-, over- or properly exposed the same shot like I want. I
don't wanna tell lies here, its the real truth. For me this Canon's
flash system works perfectly.

It is a tricky business with Canon. They want to bring in a completely new group of people, but confuse the hell out of them at the same time. The prosumer crowd is a huge consumer base that Canon would love to get into the dslr world to sell them many Canon products, but the group in question lacks a major understanding of the technical side of lighting, fel, ettl, or any other strange photography jargon... There is no reason to worry about competing against the 10d.dont worry about the 10d. for that matter do away with the 10d and make the 300d a more user-friendly camera. The point should be for the Canon marketing department to bring in loads of cash in residual purchasing...aka Lens, flashes, and long-term consumer loalty.Canon is almost there but insists on shooting themselves in the foot.

JrSamples , thanks for your input.

I actually considered 550ex but given the cost I ended up
selling my 380ex and waiting to purchase Sigma flash
as I felt Sigma is reasonably close to my needs and pretty
cheap too.

My whole target is to use 300d just like any other SLR or
P&S i used in earlier years in all those parties by giving it
to any person who asks where to press shutter.

Infact, Elan iie green mode worked 95% of the time for me.
Since I don't have a lifetime to develop this deep understanding
and since I would like to take properly exposed flash photographs
NOW, I just bought a 550ex and use +2/3FEC. Solved the problem and
I didn't have to go to photography school.

To everyone who is telling us to buy the Sigma or 550ex flash to "eliminate" the issue, I say BULL!! What you are doing is spending $200 to $300 to cover up an underexposure problem with the Rebel. There has been enough effort here from knowledgeable photogs to confirm that at least a large portion of the cams have a flash exposure issue.

After testing myself (also an ElanIIe owner), I am convinced that the poster a few days ago had the problem nailed - the Rebel's E-TTL metering is not compensating for manual adjustment of the ISO setting when in Creative modes. I have absolutely no issue with the flash when using it in full Auto mode. But the camera is defaulting to ISO 400 everytime. If you think this is crazy, use P mode, with ISO 400 set and try your internal or external flashes now without any compensation.

I feel better now :)

Also, I just don't think that one should need to go through so many
steps to obtain acceptable flash results in most circumstances.
FEL off an 18% gray surface should be something you might need to
do occasionally, but not something that is required in order to get
acceptable flash results. And going through all of that takes more
time than waiting on the shutter lag with my G1 and 420ex, which
sort of negates one of the greatest things about the 300D: the
minimal shutter lag.
I'm sorry and apologize if I seemed insulting. It just seems to me
that people are awfully quick to blame the camera, to blame a flash
system that has consistently provided excellent results for me over
the years.

However, I should in all fairness mention that I actually prefer
straight TTL over E-TTL, but that's not available with DSLR's of
course.

Lisa
I would really like to know what it is.
People answering yes may wish to consider if they have all the
knowledge they need to get good flash exposures with the 300D.
