Pixel size more important than megapixel amount for image quality?

I'm not changing the subject a larger lens senor pixel will have a greater sensitivity unless you connect several smaller ones together in series and then you loose resolution and still don't match low light capability.
In series??? As far as I can figure out, a large pixel is thought of as "small pixels in parallel" and the Poisson noise of the "small pixels" combines in quadrature. Effectively, parallel is an area concept? I cannot imagine it in a series.
