I have diffused with the practice golf balls , the one with the holes, this allows any heat to escape, for a variation I have also used the coloured ones, also I have used the small measuring cup that you find in these protein powers, they fit perfectly over the flash of the 7*7, if you need more diffusing add a wee bit of onion paper or others to the inside of the cup, I usually cut the material the depth and the circumference and place inside the cup then drop it on the flash, adjust the strength o' the flash. the cut out in the practice golf ball, or ping pong are 36 mm on the long side, 22 mm on the short and 15 mm wide or more or less to suit , They all work with different variations Seumas, Och aye there are a thousand things oot there

O' gies the power, the gift tae gie us, tae see oorsel's as ithers see us

As nobody has ever posted any pics I assume this is a hoax or its not very effective.

The next person to post must not post unless he/she has comparison pics. LOL

santa,

I noticed it seems you have some light fall off in the corners. When I ran it through PS, it looks like the left side may be a bit darker too. Could this be some limitation of the ping pong ball or does your camera require CCD alignment?

BTW.... I would have framed that white sheet of paper. It looks REALLY good! Exceptional framing, interesting subject and an incredible amount of thought was put into this. Three thumbs up......now go see my latest photo.

Oh wait this isn't photosig...... ;-)
here's a pic of a white sheet of paper taken with the ping pong
diffuser. Worked quite well, don't you think? :) :) :) couldn't
resist :) :) :)

When I used a white plastic cover (from some bottle) and took a picture of a blank wall I saw significant vignetting, i.e. the light was not as evenly spread as with the standard flash, but the image was darker towards the outside and corners.

So the Sony (or other) flash engineers have done their homework ....

Ping pong ball is more simmetrical so worth a try. Certainly looks o.k. but they are very vulnerable (although cheap).

Does anybody know what is inside the real diffusers for separate flash units ? Is it just a plastic cap or is there something inside, for example reflecting surfaces ? Why do they work best at 45 degree angle ?

I dont' do a lot of flash photography but having seen a lot of home made flash bouncers and diffusers I was at the alergist the other day and the have this wide mouth funnel thing that they use for a blow test (you breath into it and at the wide end is a fiberous white fabric). Anwway since they do not re-use it I brought it home and cut it apaprt, I'm pretty happy with how it worked. Here is a photo of it in place and a photo with and without it. Both sample shots taken in auto and no post editing except to resize for post. The handle of the bodel shows the biggest change in soft edge to shadows.

If anyone wants more info on what the device is called I can try and find out. Sorry no pre-cut photos of it, did not think of that.

Here is raw flash

Here is shot with the device over the flash.
