As far as I know, the standard way to change the color of an object is to use a Hue/Saturation adjustment layer with the "Colorize" checkbox . This works well if you can eyeball the color that you want and get the sliders to match.

I have an image and I would like to change a layer to match an exact color that I extract from elsewhere in the image. There's no way to enter an RGB or HSL value using the Hue/Adjustment layer, unfortunately. I would have thought that I could just use the eyedropper to grab a color from the image, the same way that can be done when picking text color or other colors on the layer adjustment panels.

Is there a better way to apply a specific color to a layer without needing to eyeball it with the Hue/Saturation adjustment sliders?

Thanks!

You can, but when you use the eyedropper the color you pick doesn't get transferred to the Hue/Saturation panel but instead it becomes the color of the main swatch (i.e. main tools palette, foreground color). At that point you can get the numerical readouts or fill a selection/layer with it, etc.

EDIT: Given the posts that follow below, it appears my advice was unhelpful although I'm not sure why. Sorry if I misunderstood the intent.

Sometimes I look at posts from people I've placed on my IGNORE list. When I do, I'm quickly reminded of why I chose to ignore them in the first place.

Couple of Video's that could help for you.

On this one, it shows you how to add a specific color at the 10:28 mark. You would simply enter the color value that you want in the Color Picker dialog box at the bottom of the menu.

Thank you! That's what I was looking for!

Replying to my own post with another alternative that I discovered that worked for my purposes.... Hopefully this can be useful to someone else if this comes up as a search result:

Add a "Layer Style" of "Color Overlay" and change the blend mode to "Color". There's a color swatch box that can be set to a specific color or extracted from another part of the image, which is what I wanted to be able to do.
